What does /lit/ know about the Australian publishing landscape?

I'm writing an encyclopedic novel about an architect who joins a secret society to beat the bureaucracy who won't let him build his buildings. Its basically The Fountainhead if The Fountainhead had an actual plot, likeable characters, and didn't shove its autism down your throat. Also it has light sci-fi elements.

Who's dick do I need to suck to get this published?

Would also like answers to these questions. I think city might have a bit to do with it. I’ve been reading some books published by Brow Books (The Lifted Brow lit magazine’s publishing co.) and it seems the bar is pretty low, and what’s more important is having some short stories published in different, well-established journals first. I’ve also been reading some different lit journals and their best-of yearly collections (New Australian Fiction (Kill Your Darlings journal)) and the bar also seems quite low.

Also I’m reading Gerald Murnane at the moment. He’s quite good. Reminds me of Borges, oddly enough.

I've just recently had my first collection of short stories published by a little indie publisher. My advice is go for the small indie publishers, there are plenty out there nowdays and it's far easier than the big corporate publishers who don't want to know about anyone new and unheard of.

Speaking from experience here but the bar is low because Melbourne.
Basically the Melbourne "literary scene" is a bunch of hipster faggots who sperg out about diversity and take wnakers like Benjamin Law seriously.
Best bet if you want to be published by these people is to tick the diversity checklist, tell them you're a transgender muslim refugee with Asperger's. Boom. Book published, critical praise flowing, awards won.

Yeah that sounds about right, considering the shorts I read in that collection. I hate that most stories have to be about ‘something’, as in, featuring something that is in the public eye as a social injustice. Not saying that I’m against the plight towards equality, but having a homosexual character does not make a story good, nor does having one about abortions, or meth addiction, or whatever. I feel like writing quality comes second to ‘theme’ which is just thinly veiled social issues that they wish to be addressed.

How can you know this is the 'true Australia'? These are the generic qualities of the lower classes everywhere, and it's laughable to think it amounts to something that could be called Australian Culture. We have existed for 200 years and barely have a culture.
To be intellectually honest in the course of writing this comment I looked up international alcohol consumption rates https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_alcohol_consumption_per_capita and Wikipedia says Australia is up there at #19 so I'll give you that one.
