Who here has read The Tunnel by Gass and what did you think?im having trouble finding excerpts online so it’s hard to get a feel of what to expect

I'll search for the excerpt that made me decide to read it, Anon.

This is quite indicative of what I would judge as the best substance and form in the book.

(if I don't post it within ten minutes I couldn't find it)

The first sections are intentionally hard to get through, and the alliteration can seem too unnatural at first, but I ended up loving it.

This is just a random page I flipped to.

masturbatory but enjoyable
the prose is incredible

it's a beautifully written book about nothing, which means it's a waste of time, and it's not even iconoclastic since one of the few morals to take away is "nazis bad"

what is this even supposed to mean?

Hysterically funny, you really opened to that randomly?

It is a great fucking book. My favourite of all time.
You gotta read it, first 80 pages are hard, but it mellows out towards the rest of the book.

I think I could tolerate this writing in short spurts but anything over 500 pgs would make me hesitant.you can tell gass is a writer’s writer but the average reader would get bogged down quickly.

Op here.one more question...if I’ve read maximalist tomes like the recognitions, gravity’s rainbow, etc and SoC writing such as Faulkner and “got them” to an acceptable degree, will I struggle with this?

Yeah, page 519 I think in my hardcover edition. I love the parts where he talks about his childhood.

>about nothing
That's the beauty of it. It is a book about nothing, but it is also a book about everything. As it says in the first line, "what I'm about to tell you is as long as life". It's the type of book that leaves you thinking about it for a very long time, and on several occasions on my day-to-day life I end up relating to things I read in the book, specially the boring, tedious, stressful or sad things.
As the other anons pointed out, some parts are hard to get through but it's masterfully written, definitely worth it, if you are into this type of book.

I quit after 100 pages. Doesn't get any better. Read IJ and GR with little difficulty. Hated the Tunnel.

>> No.14351958

where can I find any videos about it? is the digital version good to read on a kindle 8 gen?

>> No.14352319

I have nothing against kindle, but The Tunnel was really meant to be read as a physical book. Each page is so specifically laid out because of all the weird lineations and the parts where the text literally become images.
