Again I'd suggest visual novels. That would combine a lot of the things you liked, but in a different medium. Stories like a book, but in a "game" and with art and music.

Are you just watching mainstream theatre cinema? This year has been great for films if you're paying attention to film festivals and whatnot.
If you're having this problem with movies, then I have trouble believing you've genuinely explored the other mediums that bore you.

I need informed help /sffg/.
I'm nearing the end of Chapterhouse: Dune.
Now, I want to complete the complete the current plot, with the honored matres which clearly isn't going to wrap up by the end of this book. But I don't want to miss any essential books in between.

So my question is: Which book exactly finishes the plot? And does that book tie in with all the side stories? Should I read the side stories? Or is it safe to jump to the concluding book?

I tried looking up this information before, but some sites start giving away too much information.(spoilers), or they only list the books in release order or timeline order, without explaining plot progression between them. Ultimately, I'm confused. I believe there are "conclusion books"? Are those the ones I want?

Hunters of Dune followed by Sandworms are the conclusion to the ending of Chapterhouse. Be warned, the drop off in quality is dramatic. I bought both and didn't make it past chapter 3 of Hunters. Maybe I will when I get really bored.

How bad can it be? Dune isn't exactly the best written story. I'm in it to see how far its ideas get pushed, and the wacky powers Frank Herbert comes up with. I mean really, the entire concept of the honored matres is fucking silly. It's like a hentai plot. And each book gets progressively more pedophilic.

Well it's written by his son and has a very different voice as a result. Like you think something cool is going to happen as a result of what happens at the end of Chapterhouse and chapter 1 of hunters works to nullify most of it. I may be wrong since I didn't read that much, but it was really jarring to just drop what his father started completely.

I can imagine what you mean. I'll have to see it for myself though.
I'm willing to give it a chance. I have a lot of time to fill, so I'll probably get further than chapter 3 at least.

Personally, I've felt cheated throughout all of Dune so far. By the end of every book, there are interesting characters and plot threads that always get cut at the start of the new book. Either characters disappear, or the time jump changes them into something different. Or the time jump is so long that they are no longer alive. All the strong female characters suffer this. Not to sound too SJW, but it's just a pattern I noticed as an autat.
Jessica changes drastically between books. From caring to conniving. Alia is this little ball of potential when she's first introduced. Seemingly courteous and reserved while being headstrong. And then in the next book she egomaniacal.
Hwi: gone
Siona: Gone
Ghanima: Considered the weaker twin and disappears in between time gaps.
Who was that woman Leto foresaw loving in Children of Dune? I forgot her name, but I thought she was going to be someone important. Then nope, not even important to leto's character in the next book. Just a blip in his past.

So I was reading Dune and I got to the shield practice part. The whole "only slow objects can pass through the shield" was so dumb that I had to look up a visual representation of a Dune fight (I watched the one in the tv show) and it was even more stupid. You're supposed to fake a fast attack while slowly moving your other hand in the hopes that your enemy doesn't notice, as if he's not fully aware that his shield will reflect the fake fast attack anyways. Apparently they get rid of shields in Arrakis so why the fuck did Herbert waste a whole chapter describing all of this stupid bullshit?

I believe BRANDON SANDERSON has a foot fetish. My reason for believing this is because I have a foot fetish so I pick up on things most humans do not. Take for instance the ever shitty House of Cards. Now, I do not like this show (House of Cards) but I did sit through 4 seasons of that crap hoping it would get better, and in that time I noticed numerous examples of blatant foot fan service. It is a good fetish to pander to because it occupies a gray area due to the lack of nudity, which is why its perfect for a guy like BRANDON SANDERSON. Reading Mistborn, I can't help but notice how many times we are reminded of Vin's cute bare footedness. She's barefoot on the roof, toes clutching the edge. She's barefoot on cobblestone, only to walk on marble. Vin walked to his bed BAREFOOT, making no sound. Of course the obvious explanation (for the mundane majority of men) is that Vin is a Mistborn -- a thief -- and strives to remain quiet. She has to make lots of sacrifices due to the magneto magic of BRANDON SANDERSON'S world, such as never wearing toe rings or anklets (unless they are wooden or something) but I do not believe this is the sole reason for the foot prose on display in these books. The author (BRANDON SANDERSON) has fueled my spirit with his depiction of Vin. I have a hard time getting through the pages when I keep seeing examples of her beautiful foot-based dexterity, yet its these very passages that push me further on. I see visions of Vin toying with Elend, giving her man a royal footjob that any king would crave with her expertly trained toes. I think about Vin embarrassed, painting her toe nails to match her dress while Zane watches from the window. I think about her wearing glass slippers to show off her new feminine toes at the balls! Oh what a sight to behold! I am not even on the third book so I can't begin to imagine how much footy goodness is still to come. Anyway, these are my reasons for suspecting BRANDON SANDERSON has a foot fetish.

So I just finished A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine. Maybe my standards are getting lower as I age, but that was unironically the best SF novel I've read all year. It made me feel something I hadn't since I was a teenager staying up until two or three to finish a book I was reading: an acute awareness of how much is left in the book and not wanting it to end. This was such a bittersweet experience for me and I really hope Martine does more with this setting in the future. I don't think a sequel would be a good idea, but another novel in the same universe would be something I would actually buy, and I haven't bought a book in at least five years.

That being said, I do have a few gripes. I think it would have been a lot better if we had a bit at the beginning to get used to Lsel Station and to Mahit as a character, because throughout the novel we're supposed to be really rooting for and concerned with Lsel Station but I found I really didn't care too terribly. All we get of its culture and customs and actual physicality are just references from Mahit and the little epistle-type snippets at the start of each chapter.
On top of that, I really think Martine pulled a lot of punches with the actual way the imago works. I was getting ready to be very sad for Mahit when she got the imago surgery because I was expecting her to be someone else completely once she was through, a combination of Mahit and Yskandr, but instead it's still Mahit, she just has a little voice in the back of her head. I really didn't get the same impact with all of the mannerisms. For something this integral to the plot I really think it could have been way more destructive to her personality. Instead it's just kind of a MacGuffin.
Finally, I wasn't a huge fan that the reason Mahit's imago got sabotaged was that someone was just like 'lol fuck Teixcalaan' instead of there being any sort of plot or conspiracy. That felt like kind of an afterthought. Oh, and I think Mahit acted really out of character with the unlicensed ixplanatl; I think she would have had way more hangups about the malfunctioning imago, and I was fully expecting more to be made out of the fact that that's basically another person inside of it that she's erasing. She got over it pretty quickly.

If you haven't read the book I'd highly, highly recommend it. It's mostly political intrigue and so on but I found it absolutely fascinating, and the setting was really cool too - I wish there'd been a bit more on history and so on but the idea of an Aztec-themed space empire was really appealing to me.

Also, one thing I don't understand is if light eyes are the most important thing ever, you would think darkeyes would be extremely rare. Its just a recessive gene, just a few population of people and it would be extremely common.

The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction November/December 2019 Issue 746
PR = Personal Reaction
FP = Female Protagonist

WARNING: Spoilers for every story

NOVELETS
How I Came To Write Fantasy - Michael Libling
A first person memoir. The unnamed male narrator's girlfriend Shelley cheats on him and breaks up with him. His co-worker Jacob tells him that he's 400 years old. About 3/4 of the story is of Jacob's life. Several months pass and Shelley returns to him with a sob story that he immediately falls for. Jacob then forcibly kisses her. The kiss breaks the witch's curse. Shelley is a reincarnation of his lost love, Adrie. Adrie/Shelley then attempts to murder Jacob saying that he's an obsessed stalker and the cause of all her problems and that they were never star-crossed lovers. Jacob agrees and narrator and Shelley/Adrie resume dating, but only for a month before she cheats on him and leaves him forever for the same guy as before. Jacob, having lost his immortality, then marries another woman and dies in a terrorist attack decades later (1992), which apparently kills Adrie as well. Shelley then blames the narrator for everything that has ever gone wrong in her life. The End.
PR: Prolonged sigh.

The Joy in Wounding - Charlotte Ashley
A third person take on the story of Eros (Cupid) and Psyche set in roughly the same time and setting as the original myth. FP.
PR: I rather disliked this and don't have any interest in explaining more.

A Geas of the Purple School - Matthew Hughes
A third person high fantasy story. The latest story in the Baldemar series. Baldemar, a wizard's absurd henchman, is the protagonist. In this installment, Baldemar is temporarily a member of the Duke's secret police and they have to solve a murder mystery involving the royal succession.
PR: I've remained ambivalent about the author's works for at least 7 years, which is unfortunate.

Bird Thou Never Wert - James Morrow
A first person letter to the editor intending to publish a volume of the best works of an author that the writer knew in her youth and claims that he used an enchanted quill to become of the best writers there has ever been and that makes him a hoax unworthy of being honored. FP.
PR: Meh

gtfa

>> No.14338623

The Vicious World of Birds - Andy Stewart
A first person story with minimal speculative content. The narrator receives the scantest of details, probably mid-late 20s and minor details about personal interests, and relates everything in their life to birds. The family has gathered to have a Thanksgiving-Christmas celebration for their father to announce that he's getting married again, seven months after his wife and their mother died. The relationship is suspected to have far preceded her death. A bird, an entirely unknown species, then attacks the family. The narrator thinks it's their mother reincarnated as a bird to take vengeance upon them. Eventually the new wife to be kills the bird with a shotgun. The End.
PR: I liked a story by this author 7 years ago, but haven't liked any of his stories since then. Apparently his stories are regularly collected in Year's Best anthologies and continue to be bought by the magazine, so I assume there are people who do like his works.

SHORT STORIES
Rejoice, My Brothers and Sisters - Benjamin Rosenbaum
A first person science fiction story about a post-human, entirely data, slumming it in a zoo of biological humans as a contraband biological human because it could be good content to prove the diversitists wrong.
PR: Meh

Evergreen - M. Rickert
A first person modern fantasy take of A Christmas Carol. FP.
PR: Blah

A Hand at the Service of Darkness - Gregor Hartmann
A third person far future science fiction story. An assassination mission of a violent revolutionary terrorist. FP.
PR: Enjoyable. I believe I've quite enjoyed almost every story he's had published in the magazine.

It Never Snows in Snowtown - Rebecca Zahabi
A first person modern allegory. The snow is injustice. FP.
PR: Eyeroll

Knit Three, Save Four - Marie Vibbert
A first person science fiction story. A space ship stowaway uses the power of knitting to save the lives of everyone on board. FP.
PR: Fun

Shucked - Sam J. Miller
A third person horror story. An American couple in Italy, who are deeply in student debt, are presented with an offer. A much older man wants her to pimp out her boyfriend to him for money. She agrees. He may or may not be someone who maintains his youth by transferring himself into the bodies of others and ejecting the current occupant, hence the title. It reminds me of the movie, Get Out, except what has happened is unclear, so it's also reminiscent of PKD. It could just be that that's what she wishes had happened, because the alternative, that it's impossible to truly know another, is much more horrifying. FP.
PR: Liked the prose, ok on the rest, though really I ought to have liked it a lot more than I did.

Not included: Poems (1), Departments (7), Cartoon (1)
Because I have a general disinterest in poetry and think the cartoons are particularly mediocre. The departments are mostly reviews of various media.

I'm 1/2way through and my gripe with the book is that I don't understand why there's so much conflict. Like why does a new ambassador actively seek to insult people and take pride in doing so? Why is the imago machine kept a secret, why don't they openly sell it? Ok the empire doesn't like neural enhancement, but Lsel isn't the empire.

Everything happens so fast, it would make more sense for a teen / college student to make friends and then immediately start breaking rules, but a 20 something on her first job? maybe it's me but that felt unrealistic.

Slice of life mtl w b novels are better than all this contemporary western fantasy

>> No.14338780

>>14338749
I got that impression as well, but when I thought about it, I think that it comes down to Lsel's massive paranoia about this gigantic empire right next door to them and them keeping this uneasy sovereignty for literal generations. I think the sort of collective attitude they'd have would be extremely touchy and hypersensitive, but instead of being the sort of vacillating, self-effacing type, they go to the other extreme and make it very, very clear that they're independent and doing their own thing. Plus I think you can explain a little of it with Mahit being inexperienced, as well as paranoid given that the previous ambassador was killed and her imago malfunctioning. As for the imago, I think it comes down to it being such a key part of the station's culture. It's literally what makes them unique, and to try and sell it, especially to Teixcalaan, would be probably the worst cultural backstab most of them could think of. Yskandr only tried it because there was no other option to keep the empire off of Lsel's back, and even then it's made pretty clear how unthinkable it was to do so.

Wild Wastes: Grabbed it because of the tie in to SS. Fairly enjoyable, but I can only read about so many blowjobs before I start praying to be struck down by my disapproving deity. Also the bit about him absorbing power from stuff he ate seemed kinda pointless or just dreadfully underutilized.

On a mildly related note, I read the slush pile of submissions for a college writing contest once. My roommate was actually supposed to be the one doing it, but he said he couldn't bear reading them after looking at a few, so I did it, showed him the ones I thought were the least worst for him to pick from and then discuss with the other judges. It was both amusing and horrifying at the time. It's also important to note that my opinions will most likely be an outlier, so I'm not sure how much value they will have.

Summary:
In my opinion, I've read better in the critique threads on /lit/. I would not read this magazine ever again unless I had a compelling reason to do so.

The common themes between most of these seems to be resentment and disillusionment. It's unclear if that was intentionally chosen by whomever made the selections. It's both strange considering it's a college magazine but I guess also entirely appropriate. Maybe it's just my reading of them. Definitely not my preferred sort of writing.

I believe my intention was just to do something fun with the idea; I get how it looks just like wish fulfillment but the idea was that of course it's wish fulfillment because it's the Land of the Permanently Adolescent. I wanted to get at something kind of beautiful because this kid is falling in love for the first time but it's obviously not going to work just because of the nature of this made-up girl. I think I could have done the ending better. And yes, in retrospect, Chey's dialogue is stupid. I recall I thought I was being clever at the time.

On the off chance I haven't turned you off completely, here are another couple of stories I've gotten accepted a few years ago: https://chantwoodmagazine.com/short-fiction-mermaid https://www.foliateoak.com/audrey-rhys.html
I haven't submitted anything in a while because I'm working on a novel about Sherlock Holmes versus the Cthulhu mythos

To get back on topic, are the other Hyperion novels worth reading? I read the first one and was mildly interested. How do the others stack up compared to the general quality of the first?

No no no it isn't that bad. The story is from Watson's perspective, and the way it links up is Sherlock is actually a complete idiot who solves all his cases because he has the power to bend reality so whatever bullshit explanation for how the case happened that he can come up with is what actually happened. Then he gets kidnapped by cultists because they want to use him to make the stars right. It's going to be really good. Look for my name on the bestsellers list in a couple years.

After reading the two you've linked, I am confused as to why you initially linked the helix magazine. Was it to show how you improved? To confirm that it was bad? For me trash the others?

The Esme Smeck is overly sentimental for my tastes, but that seems to go over well for certain people.

The Mermaid is so much better, that I doubt I would have ever guessed it's the same author of Adolescent. You've definitely got the makings of something good there.

I have always had a soft spot for that story in Helix and I've also had zero meaningful feedback on it from people who actually know anything about writing. I don't trust my own bias with it. If you liked those two, here's another you might enjoy: http://journal.gonelawn.net/issue23/Rhys.php
Oh, and it's actually relevant to the thread this time.

I've always been fascinated by the ocean and The Mermaid was kind of my love song for it. Especially the really deep abyssal stuff, that's been my jam ever since I was a kid. I put a lot of love into it and I'm really glad that paid off.

On the other hand you're right about Esme Smeck, but it's also even older than Adolescent.

I am really glad you're reading these. A lot of the time it doesn't really feel like anyone cares.

I got started writing in my sophomore year of college, and I did it by writing flash fiction. I set my margins in Word to the widest possible, used 10 point arial, and every Friday I would write a one-page story. I've only recently started writing longer stuff; I have a 27k word novella that I finished about six months ago, but I don't know if I'm ever going to get that published. It doesn't seem like anybody wants novellas any more. I kind of despair over what I'm going to do if I really want to make a name for myself. I don't have the stomach for self-promotion, I hate it.

I just made up occupations whenever I'm asked for a bio because it's less shameful than saying I'm a part-time pizza delivery driver. Part-time so I have more time to write. I'm serious about that Sherlock Holmes story, I'm at 33k words so far and I think it's quite decent.

>>14339499
Have you read the Dragonlance novels? Assuming you don't mind older stuff. Just the first three, all of the million spinoffs and shit kind of lose something in translation. Certainly several classics have been that length.

I assumed you made up the occupations.

I'm definitely not doing it for the money, it's just that nothing makes me feel more alive than writing does, pathetic as that might be. I do feel fairly confident about my writing, though, and I like to think I'm at least a little self-aware of my shortcomings as a writer. I'm very weak on plots, specifically.

Sometimes I wish I'd been an artist. Visual media seems so much more popular these days.

Anybody read Scott Westerfeld's Risen Empire books? I loved them up until the end of the second one and then I was incredibly disappointed that he decided to wrap things up that way.

no, you don't. you're an idiot on several counts. for starters, gender and sex aren't synonymous, which is common knowledge now so good job on your literacy. sex (in humans) is defined by the number of each sex chromosome, while gender is defined by the cultural associations surrounding them. even in western civilization, most cultures have historically had at least three of them: male, female and eunuch

of course, the male-female dichotomy could work for sex, except that there are numerous genetic or epigenetic conditions that can result in nonstandard configurations or expressions of sex chromosomes, such as duplication or deletion
