What's to back up? The binding is shitty in terms of build and how much of a pleasure it is (or in this case: isn't) to hold, and they're aesthetically displeasing. If you want cheap books and you have options, Oxford classics are the absolute lowest you go. Things that are priced $5 are $5 for a reason. You'd be better off printing the PDF at a library and stapling the pages together. It will last 3x as long as the discount bin glue Penguin uses.

Why is this the case? Are oxford and penguin bad just because of the paper quality? Are their translations bad too?

What is a publisher you recommend?

>> No.14325486

>>14325363
No Oxford is actually really quite nice imo. The paper is very limber, not stiff, and it unfolds nicely in the hand. I just say it's the lowest because on the power ranking of publishers, it's the lowest in tier of "actually acceptable bindings". I hate every Penguin book I own. Even the hardback penguins are as stiff as lumber, it's fucking weird and unpleasant.

My personal favorite in terms of build quality and price is Everyman's Library. Unfolds nicely in the hand, binding is seen rather than glued, cloth cover feels nice in the hand (faux leather/laminate softback make my hands hot as fuck), and it has the tassel bookmark. Problem with EL is translation selection sometimes, for which Oxford might actually be better.

I really just hate Penguin lole

Are you retarded? Penguin classics are at least the quality of oxford world classics or better in terms of materials and binding. They are a huge publisher and they have the best introductions/commentaries to books, because writing an introduction for a penguin classic is an massive honour.

My HS had us get penguin classics. I still think the overall aesthetic of the books is unparalleled and offers the best introduction to taking literature seriously. In college my profs typically had us use Oxford classics, which were bound better and used higher quality material although I always found the included criticism lacking. In grad classes they had us use Norton critical which got my literary dick hard.
The real question, at least for reading in translation, is who offers the most fitting translation for your needs. Generally, penguin uses the most approachable and “readable” for lack of a better term, Oxford uses the most stylistically striking translation, and Norton uses the most literarily accurate, often with excellent footnotes going into depth about word choice and alternatives.

>> No.14326321

>>14326204
Are you sure that you have a decent sample size? Of course the Oxford trumps the other two in that pic because it’s Faust and the David Luke translation is probably the best rendering of Goethe into English, ever. But I’ve found penguin to be stylistically amazing for other works, namely Sophocles and the Oedipus cycle.

>> No.14326374

>>14326321
Not to say that the illustrated translation differences are exclusive of one another (i.e. a penguin translation will not be stylistic, an oxford translation will not be approachable, etc.) but rather the main demographic each publisher produces for falls roughly in line with those goals. Penguin’s aim is exposure, oxford’s is literary, and Norton’s is of course critical/expository.

Granted I can really only speak for German Romantic era, where my course work was comparing translations of Goethe, Tieck, Novalis, and Hoffmann, but that’s what I noticed when reading in comparison with one another and the originals

>> No.14326434

>>14326321
Also, Luke’s translation is the literary standard becuse of how he retained the poetics, but I still find Arendt’s superior becuse he somehow kept closer to Goethe’s poetics and intention than Luke while maintaining at least a comparable level of style. Atkins’ translation might be the best overall but I don’t have that one on hand. Although to be honest I don’t even like Faust anymore, and it’s pretty overrepresented in the canon if I can be so opinionated

For Penguin it's all about disseminating affordable classic books and having it as approachable as possible.

Reading the divine comedy in italian for the first time, takes quite a long while to get through each Canto. I use a bi-lingual edition with portuguese and italian (the big green paperback) and the english copy I use to look at Doré's illustrations.
The tunnel, I enjoy it quite a lot but it feels very laborious for me to get through it. Started it a while ago but 200 pages to go I took a long break. Will finish it next.
