Fr. Avila used to say, that "a single blessed be God, in adversity, is better than six thousand thanksgivings in prosperity."

based, where do I start with Fr. Avila?

okay this has made me reflect on graces and free will. If one has sufficient graces to overcome whatever trials they face what is the need for it actually occurring? I suppose to the holy logos it is non time linear?

I found it in the The Sunday Sermons of St. Alphonsus Liguori, specifically
>SERMON XXVIII. PENTECOST SUNDAY. - ON CONFORMITY TO THE WILL OF
GOD.

Alphonsus finds the most based quotes and theologians and packs it into one hell of a punch.

Get his entire book, "Sermons for all Sundays of the year".
Just as good, you can listen to them here.

I drove 12,000 miles over the past 3 months and listened to all of them, in addition to reading the text. He has great topics from bad habits, to lust, to bad thoughts, to virtue, to humility, to space-time, hell, heaven and eternity. Fascinating thinker. Cites big brained theologians and philosophers like Aquinas, St. John Christendom, St. Jerome, and Plato. Alphonsus was a polymath too, practiced law before giving it up, composed music, and had an interest in the physical sciences. Very underrated doctor of the church.

I just stumbled in here and this seems to fit: Thomas Becket used to wear filthy, uncomfortable, insect infested garments as a form of asceticism. I was always struck by the change that he forced on himself with his ascension to office.

Where's the balance point between accepting misfortune with grace, and taking steps to improve your life?
