Akaky Akakievich Bashmachkin's monster truck is old and shitty. While driving around Russia with it, the legendary piece of shit breaks down.

He takes it to a ornery old mechanic who declares that Akaky needs a brand new Monster Truck. Akaky almost swoons upon hearing this and entreats the mechanic to repair his old truck.

The mechanic is unfeeling and so Akaky must deprive himself, along with spending what little he had saved, to get a new Monster Truck. The new monster truck is lovely, earning him the admiration of his peers, but on his way home from a party in honour of the new Monster Truck - SOMEONE STEALS IT!

I have just read a novel that takes place 200 years ago in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The resident nautral philosopher has managed to collect a wild monster truck from some exotic location. While being transported aboard a small frigate, it causes tension when it has a rum-fuelled affair with the gunner's wife.

While historically implausbile, this might be a more entertaining read.
