Ok /lit/ I finally fell for the meme and dove into pic related.
I've heard schizo posters say that Hegel is a "sorcerer" and this work is a "spell" he cast over western thought, so all I can ask is wtf am I reading.
I have some experience with meditation and hypnosis and when I'm reading I feel my mind slipping into a trance like state.

>when I say 'I', this singular 'I', I say in general all 'Is'; everyone is what I say, everyone is 'I', this singular' I'

I find myself glossing over large sections like this and realizing I'm not comprehending anything and end up rereading it over and over until it becomes some hypnotic mantra in my head.
I've even gotten to the point of zoning out and thinking I am perceiving shapes and messages in the negative space of the paragraphs

Have you assholes made me open some spooky hermetic portal? Or is Hegel just really really boring

Its vaccous drivel cloaked in sophistry. Nothing more. Its literally just empty panetheism draped in endless verbiage designed to create a cultish servitude. All his work is one empty argument for authority without that authority having any compulsion. Imo Schopenhauer is the much better thinker, even if his attitudes are disdainful. At least Arty wasn't a charlatan.

I read it and its just sophistry. He could have expressed what he wanted in <100 pages imo. Superficial germans were just convinced by grandiose verbosity. Basically brainlets eho found Kant to challenging and scary wanted and authority to follow in the intellectual realm because they were being wrecked militarily by the French. Its really not worth your time imo.

Not OP, but I'm reading it too. Stuck on paragraph 17.

Can someone tell me in the most dumbed down way possible what Hegel means when he says "The True must not only be Substance but also Subject"? (I'm paraphrasing)

Kinda this. Most of my professors ended pup too ways after reading hegel. A well formed, multifaceted, and intellectual adult, or a raving Marxist who has a less than satisfactory ability to discuss various topics through various lenses.

I'm assuming you're referring to the first sentence in paragraph 17, which in my translation is:
>"In my view, which can be justified only by the exposition of the system itself, everything turns on grasping and expressing the True, not only as substance, but equally as subject."
I'm no Hegel scholar, but I'll give it a go.

>"In my view, which can be justified only by the exposition of the system itself"
Here I think he's referring to his philosophy of the dialectic in general, and the "unfolding" of knowledge to spirit, and he's saying that the next statement is only justifiable by looking at knowledge of the True through that specific lens.
>"everything turns on grasping and expressing the True"
To Hegel, the truth is 'grasped at' as spirit progresses through the dialectic. That is to say the continuous back and forth motion towards grasping, expressing and negating the True is the fundamental thing that goes toward the True.
Again he's talking about the dialectic.
>"not only as substance, but equally as subject."
Since we're talking about spirit in its dialectical motion, then the true is equally contingent on its "substance" as it is to the "subject"(spirit)

I could be way off, but I tried.

Thanks. I'll try and read this and hopefully I can progress further into this man's insane mind.
I really want to understand it because I can tell he is saying something deeply profound based on how engaging the first couple paragraphs are. But I feel like I'm getting pleb filtered out and I'm still on the Preface.

I’m convinced Hegel was on a 24hr IV of Amphetamines, glucose, and LSD while writing this book. Reading it is like laying in bed masturbating all day. Yes. I could LITERALLY do it all day but sooner or later my brain gets sore and I have to attend to my actual life. Take the Hegel pill.
