Farmer lifestyle is the antithesis of consumerism. Buy or inherit some arable land, build small comfy house, grow crops. 9 months of the year you'll be busy farming. 3 months (winter) you get off and can spend the time reading/building/crafting/whatever you want to do.

Move to a mountain town, then.

I graduated with a BS in Comp Sci in 2010. After, worked a shitty contract job for 6 months, got a GF and we travelled hobo style for 4 moths. Then, we moved cross country, first to Portland, then Seattle. During this time I travelled a lot and did a ton in the forest.

We broke up and I came back to Chicago, and after 4 years back, time has flown by and it has been incredibly draining, moving in and out of career jobs, NEETdom and lonliness. This spring I'll be leaving again, for Colorado, to Denver. Rent is higher there, but money I've saved will balance it out.

You could always buy a plot of land, too, and live in both city, and country. I have a friend who has been doing that in Oregon in a straw bale hut they built for 25 years, living in Portland sometimes, and on the land other times. You could do the same with a cabin, a small house, etc., as they are cheap to built if simple in design.

During my teenage years I had an obsession for amateur astronomy that helped me grow into a healthy adult by impressing upon me what I must describe as a religious commitment to the values of intellectual discipline that are behind science. The most valuable commitment it inspired was a commitment towards self-honesty and self-criticism; scientific skepticism first and foremost starts with one's own ideas and perceptions of the world. Becoming familiar and understanding the night sky on such a depth gave me a tremendous sense of demonstrated agency during the critical period where I was becoming an adult and learning such agency.

A whole host of other amateur sciences can offer the same experience: geology, biology, meterology, computer science, physics, engineering. If you're bored shitless with the world and are sick of all the fake shit that makes you angry, consider pursuing any amateur science that appeals to you in particular. In such an engagement you will find meaningful, authentic connections with the world around you in a direct and tangible way. Perhaps experiencing such a thing will lead you towards more general fulfillment in your life. Why not try, if one doesn't have anything better to do?

Alright, I'll spell this out for you
The value of a tourist trap is purely in terms of its broad market appeal. It's a product, quarantined off from the actual context of the place you're visiting. You are told you will enjoy it, through various forms of marketing, and you will conform to that expectation.
In truth you're going to go see whatever thing, snap a picture, and move on, with hundreds of other people looking to snap pictures of it and move on. It's a purely narcissistic consumer act.
I'll give you en example.
Against my own will I visited some tourist spot in California this summer, some driven trail, I forget what it's called. There were some quite beautiful sights, I will admit it.
The thing that was the most notable to me however was the distribution of people along the trail, and how it aligned with the tourist brochure I had.
The entire trail was filled with beautiful scenery, but there were only ever people at spots marked on the map. It's one linear road, you could not have missed the dozens of other rest stops, yet they never went to them. They were empty, there were plenty of places to park, there was scenery as beautiful as anywhere else, yet they were empty.
Fast forward a couple hundred feet to a point labeled on the map, and it's absolutely overcrowded. People are honking their horns to get parking spots, vying for positions against this equally beautiful spot. They would get their cameras, take a picture, return to their cars, and move onto the next spot marked on the map. Forgoing any place in between, equally viable, but not sold as a product.
That is the difference, it is an inauthentic experience, for pure narcissistic gain, it is a product, just like a Marvel film or the hottest AAA video game.

>> No.14266602

>>14266542
Yeah but in your scenario the problem is also on the consumer. You yourself admitted you enjoyed some of the views. They were mindless consumers but you had fun, why can't I go and enjoy those same sights?

What is approved traveling in your opinion?

>> No.14266633

>>14266602
You should base your decisions of which sights to see on factors other than "where is everyone else going"

>> No.14266641

You use where everyone is going as a list you filter based off your decisions.

>> No.14266649

>>14266602
I guess you can
But in my estimation the value in travel comes from the genuine difference that you can experience, along with the danger of such a thing.
The type of travel that I would recommend is going off the beaten path. Not that I would necessarily recommend travel at all, I think it's a fundamentally fetishized industry, but there is some value there. All of that value occurs in otherness, the things that you would not otherwise experience, the things which have no pictures, no precedent.
Though in truth there is also value in reflecting on those with precedence, and seeing how it compares to reality, to potentially rid yourself of those preconceptions, but that's not very enjoyable, at least in my estimation.
Be honest with yourself and do what arrives from that, if it feels empty, don't get rid of that feeling, take it to heart and learn from it.

>> No.14266706

>>14266649
It sounds like you're being contrarian, like you're trying to be anti-consumer for the heck of it. You want to go to the places less traveled by because there's less people not because you want to go there. Yosemite is a tourist trap. I don't know if it's expensive to go there or if you have to pay, but I would go there because I like to hike. I only know if it because it's a tourist destination. Is that bad in itself?

Solvang is a tourist trap, completely commercialized where the gimmick is it's a "Danish" destination in SoCal,I only know of it because it's a tourist trap. But I want to go because I want to see whatever is Danish about it, plus I hear it has a tiny windmill. That's more of a typical tourist destination, is that bad?

You know more of places that are marketed because they want your money, but without them you wouldn't of heard of many of those locations.

Yosemite is not a tourist trap. It's extremely cheap and people go there to camp, hike, boat, and enjoy the outdoors.

>You know more of places that are marketed because they want your money, but without them you wouldn't of heard of many of those locations.
That's true, but one has to wonder if the desire for any of it is genuine.
I think you're right in a general sense, I do prefer to visit places where there are less people, and I think that sours my perception of tourist spots. Regardless of that however, the reality of it still that certain things are sold as pure marketing ploys, and often it is a trap for those who have been overly socialized to partake in.
They are not bad in themselves, sure, but they're limiting. I'm not going to particularly accuse you of any of those issues, but that tendency to use these locations as 'bragging rights' is there, and prominent.
In a psychological sense I think I'm perhaps a bit too judgmental of these types, but it always felt so shallow and so empty. There are genuine reasons to go to many places that are popular, but in a general sense they mostly serve as social repositories, for exchanging money for a commodity experience, as opposed to experiencing it for its (and your) sake alone.
So in short if you can justify a reason to visit any particular spot that is outside of its social value, then I don't know if I could come up with any real criticism, beyond the potentiality that the very idea of such a thing is a socially mediated consumer act. But I think that is being too cynical.
Just make sure you're not being played I guess is my only criticism.

Is the idea of "escaping" consumerism on an individual level just another form of consumerism? after all the concept of a lifestyle that is the anthisesis of consumerism is just another lifestyle that is marketed to us and movements that claim to be opposed to consumerism (such as veganism or indie music) tend to just end up being used to shill products

I dunno how people actually do these things. I would rather just have good friends and avoid being sober as much as possible. Cheap unless it's crack or something lol. I don't know what I'm gonna do with all the money I have. If I could think of a way to use it to make my life more fulfilling I would. Especially in this day and age with so many possibilities... and yet, nothing comes to mind. I have always envied people who know what they like. I've tried many things but ultimately it comes back to the same emptiness. Even being a creator eventually gets old and meaningless

The opposite of a consumer is a retard who thinks material possessions can in no way bring any fulfillment or meaning and are inherently worthless. See Diogenes, or some extremely religious folk.
Consumers are stupid and Diogenes was autistic.
