Why do so many people misinterpret this book as advocating for Communism? Plato was clearly arguing for a stratified caste system, in which the ruling caste would be occupied by the most moral and intelligent members of society. The passages about holding everything in common and not owning property are clearly intended only for the highest caste, as a way of preventing the rulers from becoming corrupted by personal ambition. Yet everyone I mention this book to either loves it because Communism, or hates it because Communism.

I have never once heard anyone say that Plato was advocating for communism in the Republic.
