What are good reads on how to actually practice vedantic meditation?
I've read a lot of philosophy but it's hard to know how to apply that to actual meditation practice.

I like Eknath Easwaran. There's only so much you can and should do by yourself. You need a real world teacher.

The Yoga Vasistha has explanations of a lot of different meditations, visualizations, ways of developing a continual awareness etc. Also, 'I Am That' has a lot of good material.

also, I would add Vivekachudamani as well

The second form is breathing, becoming aware of breathing. As the breath goes in, your belly starts rising up, and as the breath goes out, your belly starts settling down again. So the second method is to be aware of the belly, its rising and falling. Just the very awareness of the belly rising and falling ... And the belly is very close to the life sources because the child is joined with the mother's life through the navel. Behind the navel is his life's source. So when the belly rises up, it is really the life energy, the spring of life that is rising up and falling down with each breath. That too is not difficult, and perhaps may be even easier, because it is a single technique.

In the first, you have to be aware of the body, you have to be aware of the mind, you have to be aware of your emotions, moods. So it has three steps. The second sort has a single step: just the belly, moving up and down. And the result is the same. As you become more aware of the belly, the mind becomes silent, the heart becomes silent, the moods disappear.

And the third is to be aware of the breath at the entrance, when the breath goes in through your nostrils. Feel it at that extreme _ the other polarity from the belly _ feel it from the nose. The breath going in gives a certain coolness to your nostrils. Then the breath going out ... breath going in, breath going out....

Breathing isn't even that powerful and your advice is actually crummy.

Also Osho/Ranjeesh is a cult leader whose many crimes icluded attempted biological warfare on the residents of a small Oregon town.

It actually is if you're fighting evil. Reminder that Christians defeated and drove your cult leader out of their community.

If you're meditating though, the most powerful methods involve the progression movement of awareness through the chakras and nadis.

If that's free weights breathing is adding resistance bands and a lifting belt. Good technique to add in, but not the be all end all and not even the best starting point.

Robert Bruce is kinda goofy but his techniques are solid, and easy to modify and adapt. Give his basic exercises a try for thirty minutes and see if you get some mileage out of them.

Also, be careful you're not being attracted to systems simply because they're exotic and have market-tested branding. Trust me, it's a great way to waste a hell of a lot of time.

See >>14204915
The book is all techniques for doing that, cover to cover.

PROTIP FOR BEGINNING MEDITATIORS: Do not move your focus outside of your body and visualize looking at yourself. This can lead to meditative dissociation, which isn't dangerous, but can be disturbing and will interrupt your work. Can take between an hour and a day to recover from.

not bad, but I would strongly recommend reading the longer one translated by Venkatesananda and published by SUNY. It's such a good text that you don't want to miss anything. It consists of a bunch of short stories and narratives that are mostly unconnected, so you dont have to commit to reading the whole thing right away, but can read a chapter every now and then and still be able to absorb and benefit from the teachings in it
