Can you guys help me out by recommending me some sources that explain why the Old Testimate is historically valid? I've been arguing with someone about this who believes that Judaism just emerged out of other religions in the area like Canaanite and Egyptian religions and so I need some evidence to prove that he's wrong.

Never really though much about how to argue for this before and don't know what info would be most convincing, so any help is welcome.

Are you an earnest seeker after truth or do you just want to bolster your own views? A slightly unfairly accusatory question to put to you, but one worth thinking about. Although people naturally want to present a better version of what they already believe in to others, I think no matter your position you should try to get out of a strictly apologetic mindset. It only leads you down a painful road of wilfully maintaining intellectual blindspots and avoiding uncomfortable information. It weakens your faith rather than strengthens it.

It isn't. The historicity of the Old Testament is attrocious.

You had better read The Golden Bough as opposition literature - and go beyond Wittgenstein's milquetoast rebuttal of it.

clearly the latter. he's asking for evidence to support his already pre-existing view, which he holds despite not having the information to convince anyone else, and wants to defend simply because he's holding it
