I can't believe people are actually getting their PhD degrees writing about Harry Potter at this point. Has academia degenerated this far? Can I get my PhD writing about anime instead of shit that matters?

Write a PhD about /lit/. Use it to argue against dialogic epistemology, because "intellectual conversation" is actually purely aesthetic. Then raise the question of whether this is anti-dialogue, or if it actually proves a rational basis for aesthetics.

The university intellectuals also play an important role in carrying out the System's trick. Though they like to fancy themselves independent thinkers, the intellectuals are (allowing for individual exceptions) the most oversocialized, the most conformist, the tamest and most domesticated, the most pampered, dependent, and spineless group in America today. As a result, their impulse to rebel is particularly strong. But, because they are incapable of independent thought, real rebellion is impossible for them. Consequently they are suckers for the System's trick, which allows them to irritate people and enjoy the illusion of rebelling without ever having to challenge the System's basic values.

Because they are the teachers of young people, the university intellectuals are in a position to help the System play its trick on the young, which they do by steering young people's rebellious impulses toward the standard, stereotyped targets: racism, colonialism, women's issues, etc. Young people who are not college students learn through the media, or through personal contact, of the "social justice" issues for which students rebel, and they imitate the students. Thus a youth culture develops in which there is a stereotyped mode of rebellion that spreads through imitation of peers—just as hairstyles, clothing styles, and other fads spread through imitation.

Delusional. It happens, I should know because it's happening in my master's course right now. I have no doubt it will carry on for PhD students.

Feel free to show me cases where it happens. For what it's worth, throwing a look at the database of dissertations of my literature department from the last few years, there is barely any genre literature mentioned at all, much less something like Harry Potter.
Though, of course, I don't really see why a careful analysis of the Harry Potter phenomenon would be an illegitimate thing to study, as >>14184293 suggests.

Why is this a worthless thing to explore, if done with rigour? It is actually quite interesting to see how the books seemingly had no mention of homosexuality, yet the books' own author today treats it as if it's always been there.

Because homosexuality is instilled. It's a set behavioral mechanism and runs contrary to people's natural inclinations.

Yes.

I just started my second literature PhD year. I'm European and getting a salary to do this shit, so please don't mention tuition and slave-like overwork. You have to understand that people research all kinds of stuff in every single field. Whether a HP project would be worth it depends on the exact approach I guess. In my opinion, something like >>14184694 is pretty stupid, but readings that focus on particular ideological interpretations are not my thing anyway. There are plenty of weird projects that probably don't deserve funding, but what can you do. I'm enjoying the process and it is interesting to write a lengthy piece on a topic I am passionate about. I don't give a single shit about the Dr title.
