We build up resistances to drugs, diseases and various other things.

Do you think it's possible to build a resistance to emotion? Being made happy or sad so many times it eventually loses 99% of its potency. Older people describe it as being tired, like an old drunk saying he's too tired of being angry to be angry anymore.
