In hindsight, John Updike did sex scenes well in that they actually added to the characters and weren't there for entertainment, like he made the sexual experiences actually relevant to peoples inner lives.

I need to reread him.

I don't have a problem with American Psycho's sex scenes since they fit the books themes but I was reading on the train and it was the first really explicit sex scene and the guy next to me, 40s, manual worker type, high vis jacket, smelt like piss, respectable enough, 100% looked at what I was reading and probably saw the word clit, cunt and asshole all over the page and thought I was reading erotica. That was pretty funny.

Jesus dude start with something more entry level. Your brain is probably slower than a 1995 Macintosh from lacking stimulation. Try Of Mice and Men or Animal Farm. Whenever someone asks what to read when getting into literature, they should also be recommended something short and good. You need to build up your tolerance for literature first. And nothing turns you off reading faster than a long book you don't like.

Wtf you losers, that's a good scene. It's actually essential to the book too. I was going to use it as a good example. It's brief, informative of character and works to establish future events. What would please you drydicks and vacuum-sealed cunts? Have you never had a night of passion you could look on reasonably in your joyless lives?

Highschool texts is usually a good entry and then you can just read whatever. Gatsby, Dickens' stuff, some Shakespeare, Fahrenheit 451, ect. I haven't read Farewll to Arms yet so maybe it's not a heavy read but still, you don't want to get discourage when you take /lit/'s word to read Plato and get bored or confused. My brother's a brainlet and he tried to go straight for non-fiction and he stopped reading all together. Try to find stories you enjoy until you learn to enjoy the reading itself.

I'll try that thanks Anon. I actually read Fahrenheit 451 months ago, it was great. It's really short but it was great, it was stressful reading the main character trying to act normal even though he was falling at the seams, and the mechanical hound was stressful.

Protip: Literature is art. Art is subjective, not objective. The best books are the ones you like. Read things that speak to you. If you start reading something and 100 pages in you are fucking miserable, drop it. If you really want to read it, try again later. Maybe years later. I've done that and I've read effortlessly, for fun my entire life. Really. There's no shame, is my point. None at all. If you're looking for specific recommendations, I really like Dune by Frank Herbert, Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, and Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. I like stuff that makes me think or at least attempts to engage me on an intellectual level, but those books are widely known and lauded, so give them a shot. Here, actually. A much, much smaller book, but a little more difficult of a read: A Separate Peace by John Knowles. Very short but a big impact. Should help you toughen up without wearing you out.
