Also reading Republic after the essential Plato dialogues (Google Plato essential dialogues) so you get a grasp of his style and ideas since the Republic is more of a grand summation.

Reading Plato by Thomas Szlezak is great. I also thought Alan Ryan's chapter on Plato in On Politics was quite good. I havn't read it, but the chapter on Plato in Wolin's Politics and Vision is probs good too
