"maman" is closer to "mamá" than to "madre" (which would correspond to "mère")

for the record, it translates to "today, mom has died." you have to know that the simple past ("mom died") is ignored in oral french (and replaced with the composed past) as it is deemed too literary.

so in spanish it'd be "hoy, mamá ha muerto."
