Just finished Lolita.

What do you guys think about this book? I am conflicted, feeling sorry for HH as he is so deeply in love with Lolita but she runs away with other men, but at the same time he is a pedophile.

He is a disgusting pederast, there is nothing to be sorry about. He admits he is in love with the fleeting form of hers even if he romanticised his future life whit her.

I got the sense that the book was supposed to be a satire/criticism of romantic novels and romanticism, and that HH's pedophilia was just the popular culture idea of romantic love taken to its most absurd and disgusting extreme. I enjoyed the book but there was something very cynical about it that put me off, although that might just be me projecting what I know about Nabby and his personality onto the novel.

How is it disgusting? Girls that age are more beautiful than older women. Why isn’t it disgusting to be attracted to older women too?

It is kind of disgusting. But the way he grooms and takes possession of her is the more disgusting part.

what if she actually was attracted to him though? The story could have had a good ending, too

You're applying contemporary moral standards as if they are universal. This is exactly how Nabokov wants you to react.

Because at that age her prefrontal cortex is not developed enough to make proper decisions. One can even argue that because of the way HH treated her, she develops in a way that causes her to run off with child pornographers and later get pregnant at 17.

By what standard? When are females capable of making such decisions, bigot? If you ask some women, 22 year olds shouldn’t be able to choose to marry a 60 year old man. So when is the right age?

She had sex before Humbert and seduced him

I can see this, but the ending just becomes so tragic that I feel that the novel is more than just a satire

18-25 is post adolescence and the body is becoming ready for adulthood. No mention of sexual relations before those years.
Human development is strongest for 7-60 and after 30 a decline begins.

Brain maturation during adolescence (ages 10–24 years).

Teens make risky decisions.

Hardly any of these are compelling, especially when most of Europe and the USA has an AOC of 16 and highly developed countries like Germany has an AOC of 14 and Denmark 15. I wouldn't have sex with someone that young, but most of the arguments I've seen have been puritan American boomers yelling platitudes just to deprive their children of responsibility.

It if were any less beautifully written it would be solidly placed into the satire category, but the emotional gut punch of Humbert asking her to come with him again, after he finds her- it's difficult to not finish that passage a little teary eyed and truly believe he loved her, even if it was a cruel corrupted love.

I had the same reaction, the language used by Nabokov is so beautiful and the final rejection is devastating. Humbert loved her until his death.
