I think it draws parallels to people's present plight and misery in the first world. The isolation of indebted, single living. The debauched vibe around us. It all seems to bring misery, and so the stoical and insightful meditations of gnostic thought seduces the common 4channer.

I think the subversion of the 'official' Christian narrative and the presentation of Yahweh as a malicious demon fits well with certain modern views on religion that see it as tyrannical, irrational etc., hence the appeal of Gnosticist imagery.

There are books about this

Grimstad's The Modern Revival of Gnosticism will give you a thumbnail sketch even though she's really repeating what other secondary sources have said. If you look at her footnotes in the early chapters you can get to other books on the topic.

it is a rule that the gn at the start and end of words is usually silent and we do tend to have a syllable split on the gn in words like ignore but I don't think that prevents us from pronouncing it correctly, at least I don't seem to have an issue saying the german words gnom or gneis, your wiki link also provides an interesting exception in the acronym GNU which stallman insists is pronounced 'guh-nu' because brits (and not americans) tend to pronounce gnu like the other germanic languages because of the 'the gnu song' song
english doesn't have a sound for [ɲ] (closest approximation is /nj/) which is probably what you mean on reflection, most english speakers butcher words like El Niño, cognac, vignette, etc, and I have heard people turn gnocchi into 'nocky' but anecdotally as a brit I've never pronounced the g in that one silently oddly enough

Here's my hot Moldbug take on the matter: Richard Dawkins-style atheism is effectively a Unitarian Christian heresy, making a god out of Progress to spite what it sees as the regressive Christian God. And now you have Gnosticism, one of the oldest Christian heresies there is.

So edgyness doesn't really change here.

doctrines created problems that it couldn't solve without leaning too much on outside work (hello, plato) then idiots sealed it with insufficient scriptures in the finished, thinking everyone in a preliterate world would just take the priests at face value. no direct universal catechism or exegesis just within the book itself. only 27 books and most are short letters.

shit, go out and find laymen who've even heard of some of the church fathers let alone read their works TODAY, in a 90%+ literate western christian world with digital instant re-usable printing presses. not even passing judgement one way or another one any of their doctrine. but you see the problem.

so when they burned all the shit and unbrained everyone who disagreed with the Institutional Truth the shit the gnostics were working on got buried figuratively under dogma and literally out in the desert. then when some people translated the works they found out that hey, these fuckers were onto something and so were the artists

it's as much of a comment on the human condition as the prolefeed christian message regardless if parts of the NT are thinly veiled polemics against it and regardless of the incoherency of the NHC or the sometimes obsequious visionary content of those who work on the themes

platonism is gay and views the demiurge as neutral

OP gnosticism is becoming "more popular" because it was literally heresy for many centuries. The Catholic church genocided Cathars and Bogomils to prevent any of their works from getting out. It wasn't until the Nag Hammadi codex were discovered (coincidentally at the end of ww2) that gnosticism began to gain traction again. Not only that, through the freedom of information on the internet, you have so much access to the Apocryphya's, old christian history, gnostic scriptures, and other gnostic prophetic work-its quite hard to avoid.

IMO I view the internet as a meat grinder for truth, and gnosticism will only get more popular, as it is the truth. We live in a fake and gay simulation governed by a demonic jewish blood god (yahweh, anu, yaldabaoth, etc.) in the physical form of saturn, projecting time keeping us stuck within its hypercube. The Cathars knew this, and that Yhwh's chosen were some of the chief archons (as they are today) and were genocided by a corrupted demiurgic co-opting of christianity (Catholicism) that reaffirmed the jewish demiurge ywhw. Pray to christ, or his energy, bring the kingdom of heaven to earth. Stop fapping.
