Well it doesn't feel much heavier than let say The Illiad. Though I think mine is the shorter edition, about 1200 pages

>> No.14102616

It's French: Anthologie de la poésie francaise, Pierre de Boisdeffre. I grew up reading it, it opened so many different worlds, and I loved the short biographical notes before each poet's works. I recommend it to anyone who speaks a modicum of French

interesting premise, can you perhaps give a pic of the contents?

Go and catch a falling star,
Get with child a mandrake root,
Tell me where all past years are,
Or who cleft the devil's foot,
Teach me to hear mermaids singing,
Or to keep off envy's stinging,
And find
What wind
Serves to advance an honest mind.

If thou be'st born to strange sights,
Things invisible to see,
Ride ten thousand days and nights,
Till age snow white hairs on thee,
Thou, when thou return'st, wilt tell me,
All strange wonders that befell thee,
And swear,
No where
Lives a woman true, and fair.

If thou find'st one, let me know,
Such a pilgrimage were sweet;
Yet do not, I would not go,
Though at next door we might meet;
Though she were true, when you met her,
And last, till you write your letter,
Yet she
Will be
False, ere I come, to two, or three.

Well, shit is really great!
How do I get into him?

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou are not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou'art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy'or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.

Rabindranath Tagore's poetry is a bit too sweet for my taste. His short stories are better.

>> No.14104000

Absolutely based.
All their bilingual anthologies of poetry are also excellent. German, Italian, Spanish, English and Chinese.

agreed. also I dont understand them

I read his short stories a while back. They felt a bit bland and dated. Like they were from a different era. Decent writer but still leaves me wanting, unlike Chekhov.

>> No.14105838

Main charm of Tagore lies in his prose, so you need to read him in original to really 'get' him. His contribution to Bengali is basically what Shakespeare's contribution is to English language.

Would also appreciate if anyone could recommend such a volume.

his prose even in english has universal soul. try reading his letters.

>If I had gone off to bed leaving the shutters closed, and thus missed [the moon], it would have stayed there all the same, without any protest against the mocking lamp inside. Even if I had remained blind to it all my life – letting the lamp triumph to the end – til for the last time I went darkling to bed – even then the moon would have been there, sweetly smiling, unperturbed and unobtrusive, waiting for me as she has throughout the ages.
