I'll just copy something from a certain review of it:
"The Eye of The World is a more accessible version of Tolkien, but Tolkien is already a simplified version of the Norse Sagas, meaning that Jordan felt a need to dumb-down the accessible, which doesn't leave his book with much personality."

what a dumb take of "Tolkien"

I read the first book, it was ok, just generic fantasy stuff. Then got halfway through the second before abandoning it. I just don’t have the patience to get through such generic slog.

But can you guys name "non-generic" fantasy? Because i know plenty of people who hate fantasy and even fiction in general with passion, and think a person should only read philosophy, politics and technical guide books.

It's genuinely not worth the time. There's some interesting things, but you could find a lot more pleasure and edification for the same page count elsewhere.

The most non-generic fantasy story I've ever read was "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" by H.P Lovecraft. Quite a wild ride; no orcs, elves, goblins or such. It's mostly original stuff, very recommendable and in my opinion Lovecraft's best work.

it's 14 (!) fucking books man! how is that more accessible?
It's not more accessible, it's nothing like Tolkien. It's just a boring over-stretched generic-fantasy chad/marry-sue-power-fantasy

I regret that I wasted my time pirating the eye of the world. it's trash literature and I would only give it another go if I was placed in a solitary cell with these books as my single form of recreation.

utter trash. have you read sanderson? also written for 12 year olds but is less predictable, has novel ideas, some halfway though provoking passages and the action scenes are quite nice

The first book is a fairly straight forward rip off of LotR (as admitted by the author) and has almost nothing to do with the rest of the series. except as kind of an extended prologue that establishes the world and the main cast. It's among the weakest books in the series and it tends to drag.

Book 4 is where things really take off into the wider story, however book 3 has a pretty satisfying ending to tie up the first three books overarching plot.

It's a big time investment and people either love it or hate it but no one ever walks away thinking it was "just okay." If you can't make it to book 4 then don't bother trying to read the rest.

The story becomes a lot more funny when you pay attention to the escalating alcoholism of the characters. Punch, wine, it is scooped into cups and chugged every other page.
I was born in Serbia. I know what alcoholism looks like. Rand was literally drunk for the last five books and he totally acts like it, right down to his bamboozled attitude regarding women.

>> No.14091871

One of the worst fantasy series I've read. All the characters are one big repetitive unchnaging trope each, events happen at slower-than-snail pace, and everything (including the ending) is predictable. Mat was the only cool character, but he disappears for two or three books in the middle, leaving us with Generic Fag #1, Generic Fag #2, and their Strong Women Companions as main characters. Plus, if he said anything about dice or gambling one more time, I would have shot myself.

The main hero is also a nerd. He has a tomboy, a princess, an amazon warrior, and probably even his childhood friend all wanting his cock, and still the loser doesn't lose his fucking virginity until 25000+ pages in. And the first thing he does afterwards is propose like a dipshit.

The only two chapters I liked...in the entire Wheel...were the flashback chapters showcasing how the world used to be like in the previous age, before the Dark One busted out. And two chapters in such a long series does not equal redeeming quality either.

If you want generic fantasy trash, just read Eddings or Duncan instead. They both write evolving characters that don't just become a walking trope for 14 books.

At some point, at the end of a book, the main guy kind of fixes the magic for men and it's a big fucking deal and I was a bit eager to see what it would do in the world but then the whole next book is like about other events that were happening at the same time as the previous book so you don't even get to see what happens for another 1000 pages and I said fuck it and gave up there.

That's what people like this mean when they say accessible though. Because Tolkien is seem as dense and boring by a lot of people who are looking for more pulpy depictipnsnof fantasy.

I liked the series a lot. It gets kinda bad at book 12 though. Robert Jordan died and had Brandon Sanderson finish out the last 3 books. Sanderson is a hack.

It has pacing problems and desperately needs to be abridged. Jordan recycles a lot of material and his presentation of certain things is kind of cringe. I'd have liked it better if it was shorter, probably, but I did finish it and liked it well enough.

Read the first six books. That is 'The Eye of the World' until 'Lord of Chaos' After that just forget about it. But it's true though. Now don't get me wrong. I love LOTR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion etc, but its still objectevily true that Tolkien books are just more accessible versions of norse, celtic, finnic etc sagas.

>> No.14094996

They hold a special place in my heart since my Dad read them growing up and was excited about them coming out when I was young. Kind of weird since he was this stoic, brawny man who worked manual labor most of his life, and had a pretty rough young-adulthood and childhood. It was always endearing to me that he had a soft spot for this type of thing. It's kind of a comfort reading them looking at it that way, even if it isn't what I usually enjoy.

Wheel of Time, Volume 83, "The Gravitas of Stone"

The White Tower sets a ban on rational behaviour. Any sister caught pointing out obvious existential threats, ie The Black Ajah, is stilled and executed out of hand.

Perrin bemoans the loss of his true-lobe slash dominatrix from afar. Like three books away.

Mat does rogue stuff. So comical!

Rand mopes. And acts 'mad'(?) In that he reacts to stress by being stressed. So he must be insane. Also he grews his haram to 27 sweet sweet babes.

If you like fantasy, there is no reason why you shouldn't read it, just like there is no reason why you should read it if you don't like fantasy.

It is basically the Platonic ideal of the whole genre. I love it, but then again, I love fantasy literature so this shit is made exactly for me.

I'm close to the end of the fourth book and I've enjoyed it so far. The only woman among the main characters that I've felt has been a despicable cunt is Faile. I can't wait until Rand forces all of the Aes Sedai to bow down to him because when he's so powerful it makes their plotting seem insignificant.
