Notice how he's the only one in that era who gets shit for it, only because he's ideas are part of popular culture. And misunderstood at that many times.

>> No.14085550

I've almost finished Whisper in the Darkness - I had to stop prematurely last night because I couldn't get comfortable - and I think it might end up being my favourite Lovecraft story yet.

Everyone from academic philosophers to fringe occultists always reference this guy annd have nothing but good things to say about him. Is he really that good?
Did he actually have esoteric knowledge about reality and disseminate it through allegorical horror-tales?

No, they're just good stories.

I only read At the mountains of madness.
Didn't like it. I was bored with the exception of some parts when they discover the story of the elder things, but not for much.

I also felt the book was filled with unnecessary descriptions.

At the Mountains of Madness is his capstone work, but only if you've read most of his other works first to establish the setting. Reading it first spoils the shit out of most of the other stories.

That was the first of his I read and I enjoyed it. I thought it was real neat how the book transitioned from a chronological scientific account to something bizarre.

Most people are too cowardly to confront the latent horror of the human condition. Lovecraft does so nicely, and with strong, well selected literary influences.

if you don't like lengthy descriptions, lovecraft is hard to enjoy without reading a good portion of his stories or otherwise learning his mythos

I actually just read that story yesterday and got a good laugh out of it. I'm starting to love Lovecraft.

He was obsessed. I've read many books from that era and he's the only one ranting about nigger every two seconds. Even Sarmiento, Borges and Stoker were less racist than Lovecraft.

Lovecraft was the most down to earth person imaginable. He took the science of his day and wrapped it up as Gothic horror stories. People will believe in and worship anything

There's no order, just find an anthology of some of his stories and dive in.
