What's your favorite short story or essay by DFW? I really love "Host". The way that the guy who DFW was interviewing acted when he died haunts me when I think about it sometimes.

Can someone explain the last Brief Interview With Hideous Men to me?

His best are "Ticket to the Fair" and the cruise ship one, by far. Only depressives like Oblivion and his Interviews with Hideous Men.

I don't really like his short stories that much, but I don't like anyone's short stories.
I love Derivative Sport and all the tennis ones, and then there's American Usage. Never thought I'd enjoy a dictionary review but DFW never ceases to amaze. That one is fantastic.

How does his short stories compare to that of Borges (for example)? Are they actually good or should I stick to his novels?

Yeah, the nonfiction essays he wrote in his 30s was his best work imo.

American Usage is fucking awesome. It's inspiring how much value he finds in those rules and how he interprets the arguments around them.
