When I'm done reading a book I usually just gift it to someone. I got several people into the hobby this way, plus I buy cheapest paperbacks I can find so it's never a big loss

Its in three rough categories: paperback and lesser editions, first editions, and antiquarian books.
I was under the impression every shelf was set in more or less the same way. My tolkien is with tolkien, first editions or otherwise, and same with some other authors, but I won't have a penguin copy of grapes of wrath next to my $300 East of Eden first edition

I usually divide it by subject. For example literary fiction goes together, graphic novels, philosophy, non-ficiton. Then from there I do it by Author. Certain publishers have their own shelves. NYRB and Penguin Classics for example, but sorted by Author and type.

For the most part I organize by country of origin, all of my American Authors are in one spot, my British Authors, Russians, French, Spanish, Japanese, etc.
Surprisingly useful method of organization.
Not perfect but useful.
