the methods of delivering fuel to homes differ greatly between (most of) the uk and usa. fuel is also cheaper in the usa. and the uk doesn't have such extremes of temperature that some parts of the usa have. hence the usa frequently has big wasteful central heating as opposed to the more efficient methods in the uk.
