He didn't know how to be like his peers, how to act, talk and think like they did. If you are a young person, you need to be able to be like other young people in general, or young people in some subgroup of young people. If you fail to do that, your peers, all the other young people will think that you are mentally disabled, or a "retard", like they put it. That's because humans are pack animals, especially young individuals, who assess other people's intelligence according to how well they are capable of imitating or emulating other people around them. Even if you were a genius, they will think that your are a retard, just because you are inexplicably different, acting, talking and thinking differently than anyone else, without explanation to it. It's the burden of humanity.
