I also loved this book, but I'm always surprised when people say they like it because relate to Holden's viewpoint, or dislike it because they don't.

It's compelling and poignant because someone who basically likes others and basically wants to do good is tragically lost and misguided and out of connection to the world. He's not a brilliant free thinker who sees clearly or a hateful idiot, just a miserable, lost, confused, but loving and good person.

Following him on a fairly unimportant journey wouldn't be interesting to if his current viewpoint were tenable. It's interesting because he's so stuck, yet so redeemable.

I think most people read it as young teens for the first time (I was 14) and I think at that age most readings are more heavily informed by emotional reaction to a text than anything else. Most people just haven't read widely enough or had their prefrontal cortex develop enough to make a truly detached analysis at that age, so they latch onto what's relatable. Many depressed teens would find Holden's perspective relatable.

Read this book for the first time last week, enjoyed it a lot.
Not sure if I'd have enjoyed it more or less during my edgy teenager phase, but I definitely saw a lot of my 15 year old self in Holden.
Especially the imaginary scenarios he creates that make him sad, like imagining the prostitute going to the store to buy her dress and the shopkeeper thinking she was a normal girl.
I remember looking at a box of dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets and being really depressed by the drawing of a dinosaur. Picturing a 30-something year old man making empty art for a commercial product and heading back to an empty home, just to do it again the next day.
