Yes you should read them.

Long Sun is far, far more straightforward than Urth/BotNS. I personally think it's a better place to start with Wolfe for someone who's "afraid" of BotNS for whatever reason. Unfortunately it's also a little boring, if you really liked BotNS. The payoff is that Short Sun is really good.

There is some seriously weird stuff in Short Sun, although if it's confusing it won't confuse you "further".

I recently got a job which involves me standing around for about 6 hours a day. I thought it would be great because I could read, but I get interrupted around every 1-2 minutes, and all of the books I normally read are just too much because I've always enjoyed descriptive fantasy and hard sci-fi (Peter F. Hamilton and Robert Jordan are two favorites)

I'm looking for books that are written very simply, but not poorly. I've been trying to get into web novels but they're so many are SO badly written I can't even handle them. I read two of John Scalzi's books because they're so dialogue heavy and the vocab is elementary. Any recommendations?

I picked up Way of Kings last week and am wondering if I should finish it. I'm already about 600 pages into the book.

This book just hasn't made me feel anything. I haven't been intrigued with anything in the world, I haven't derived much of a real sense of emotion from character interactions, and the plain prose hasn't really helped. I just feel like I'm wasting my time, and this is no offence to anyone that likes this book, it's just not my thing it seems.

So does this book pay off or should I put it down if I'm still not interested? Thank you in advance.

How many people are going to fall for the Sanderson meme? Both his prose and characters are so incredibly boring and dull I will never understand why he's so popular with normalfaggots.

>> No.14030408

>>14030367
As the other anon eluded to, his books go from dull and plodding to anime frippery in the last handful of chapters.
But I dropped the book 500 pages in, so I'm not sure if it pays off. I felt the same way you do and was very bored with the lack of tension. Also, the lack of likeable characters was a big factor, with each person being a sack of depression in poor circumstances. I'm sure it's intentional and by book 4 they'll all be confident and stronger, but I didn't feel like suffering through it without any promise of an equal payoff.

A few friends who usually give me good recommendations pointed me to this one. Unfortunately when we're not meeting eye to eye with my issues on the book. You see what I'm saying right? The characters don't feel human. They feel very fantasy.

Midway through the book, an interesting plot finally takes place, the autist calms down, then there are a few more chapters about literal whos as a massive roadblock and it ends on a great note because Abercrombie can certainly write endings but not middles. and then a bunch of my favourite characters get marched out and killed because why not, RIP

Do yourself a favor. Write down a list of books or series you are potentially interested in. Log into your audible account on your desktop. Buy a book using your 1 credit, download it on your phone/device, return the book to get your 1 credit back but still have the actual audiobook on your phone/device. Repeat as needed. They'll let you do up to 50 returns in a month before you start getting thrown to support to do so, at which point all you have to do is tell them "yes, I want to return this book" and they'll return it for you.

I managed to, no shit, get the entire DragonLance saga (~18 books), the entire Drizzt saga (31 books at the time), all of ASOIAF, all of Wheel of Time, all of The Dark Tower, and about a dozen other books, within the very first month of using audible. That was three years ago, and I'm STILL going through the backlog of audio books. All for just one month. It's practically stealing, but it feels sooooo good.

Because those western authors don't know how to write, they've been so warped by today's standards and definition of romance that the old fashioned concept man and woman fall in love without any love triangles, unnecessary drama, cuckery, forced bittersweet endings etc. Most western fantasy fans are the same in that they think what they're getting is "subverting expectations" when they're actually just getting shitty writing.

2019 FANTASY:
THE BONE SHIPS: Nautical fantasy about a ship of condemned prisoners being given a purpose by the sudden appearance of a captain.
Loved it.
DRAGONSLAYER: Protag is the last Dragonslayer left alive after the dragons were all killed off and has descended into being a fat alcoholic, then a dragon reappears and some politicking dickhead from his past forces him to go and kill it.
Loved it, despite the fat alcoholic detail it's more serious and melancolic than comedic.
FOR THE KILLING OF KINGS: Wot if the three musketeers happened in a weird land of shifting planes. Conspiracy forces the protags on the run/and on a quest whilst a war is about to break out.
Loved it.
AN ILLUSION OF THIEVES: The king/ruler's Courtesan is thrown out after her brother gets caught using magic which is illegal and she goes back to the slums, after like 150 pages of good writing about them struggling to survive they begin to uncover a plot to overthrow the king/ruler and start to plan a heist to prevent it.
Fun book I'm going to happily read the sequel.
SIXTEEN WAYS TO DEFEND A WALLED CITY: It's KJ Parker doing the most KJ Parker novel possible, an unreliable narrator of a protagonist tells the reader how they pretty much single handedly fought off a siege from the grandest army in all of history even though there's no light at the end of the tunnel if they defeat it.
I loved it and I'm someone who hasn't been sold on all of Parker's past work.
THE RAVEN TOWER: Something narrates to the protagonist the story of how they came to be whilst plots go on in the protags world.
Didn't like it much, didn't think the narrative gimmick was worth putting up with given how it paid off.
THE RUIN OF KINGS: Protag is discovered to be a long lost prince of one of the branches of the royal family and this leads them into a world of threats and intrigue, this is split with narrative from a second timeline where the protag is (IIRC) in jail after a failed revolutionary plot.
Great book, wasn't sold on the split timelines but it paid off well enough.
THE OUTLAW AND THE UPSTART KING:
So this is the fifth book in a series that started off with the protag doing heists in a steampunk england mainly thanks to them disguising themselves as a brother that doesn't actually exist.
By this book the protag and friends are stranded in Newfoundland which has developed into a sort of harsh feudal state of exiles, the protag has to find a way off the island even if it takes starting a civil war.
I loved this, started the series after I saw this book in new releases and read the whole thing in a week, the first trilogy was fun but the second one is really good.
Blood of an Exile: Exiles are dragonslayers, protag is one and gets called back to the city to go and try to steal back a kidnapped princess from a secretive rival nation.
Interesting because it's fantasy where everything boils down to dragon biology but other than that not remarkable might not read sequel.

I realise you said scifi but I typed the whole fantasy post out first as I was gonna do both sffs before I reread it
2019 SCIFI:
CRY PILOT:
Most fun book of the year. Protag wants to repent for their past actions so forces themselves into a prison troop programme where they're strapped into weird pseudo-mechas which need a human pilot to work but seemingly can't be controlled by one, most pilots die but if you survive you get into the army proper.
Set in the distant future where humanity has terraformed a destroyed earth but now finds themselves fighting dormant weapons from past wars which are revived into pseudo-kaiju by the terraforming process.
So much fun and so well paced. It's very obviously an attempt to just shove a military scifi framework over a mecha anime plot but it turns into a great scifi novel.
FINDER:
The best book I've read this year. Protag is a repo man in the near future where most of his jobs involve taking back stolen merchandise from crimelords. He's sent to a small colony orbiting around a gas giant in the farthest corner of occupied space to repossess a ship stolen from a local trade boss but pretty much the moment he arrives the space cable car he's in with another passenger is attacked and the colony launches into civil war. So now he's got to work his way from one end of the colony to the other to try and get the ship whilst becoming more and more involved in the local conflict.
Amazing book, there's more to it than that as the book advances but to say much would be to spoil it. I thought it was standalone and thought it was perfect and then found out there's gonna be a sequel and was even happier with it.
AFTERSHOCKS:
This is by Marko Kloos who previously wrote a milscifi series that had a strong opening but gradually lost my interest.
This is different because we move from war into a tale of life 15 years after an interplanetary war. The protagonist is a POW from the defeated side finally released back into the world who is trying to adapt and find his way whilst in the background intrigue and mysterious events suggest that war might threaten to break out again.
This was good as so much better than I expected from Kloos, can't wait for the sequel.
WINDS OF MARQUE:
It's a nautical novel in space with the protags commissioned onto a secret mission to try and prevent pirates from causing another interspecies war.
Fun enough
WE ARE MAYHEM:
Second (and final?) in a series of "star wars but" novels that has a great premise but ends with power of friendship rubbish don't bother with the series (Black Star Renegades)

Stuff that I either haven't started or finished that caught my attention: THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR, EMPRESS OF FOREVER, THE MUNICIPALISTS, ROSEWATER BOOKS 2 and 3.

So yeah weaker year for scifi than fantasy for the stuff I like within the genres but the peaks for scifi are much higher, there's stuff out there but 80% of scifi new release blurbs sound the same to me.

Nah science fantasy is stuff like Deathstalker or Star Wars where it's traditional fantasy stories like the heroes quest and the evil magical monarch who has to be overthrown but set in a world where everything is full of scifi stuff like space battles.

The previous examples are novels where the world and the plot is fantasy and being in the distant future is a fairly incidental detail.

That depends on how many words are on a page, which is mostly a matter of font size and book size, and how complex the book is. It also depends how much you are trying to comprehend everything you are reading by basically having a running movie in your head. There are various other factors as well.
If it's an ebook, "pages" are even more nebulous. All that matters in the end is if it works for you.

Stormlight is the epitome of long set up for big climax.

He does a slow burn setting up the characters and the stakes. A lot of the characters spend most of the book apart and then all collide at the end. Its very satisfying almost to a guilty pleasure level.

So basically if you 600 paged in you owe it yourself to finish. You'll be super into as it ends and be stoked to read the next one. Then you'll get bored half way through and the cycle repeats.

Obviously it’s left ambiguous. But it does say that, from where they first arrive, Sorento walks up a hill to get a better view. Shannow follows him up there, says “I am become death,” and then walks back down, meaning he returns to the teleport location. When Sorento realizes where and when he is, he looks back for Shannow and he’s gone. So I think it’s obvious that he teleported away again. But where to isn’t clear. And also whether he survives his gunshot wound also isn’t clear. He says his stone doesn’t have enough power to save him and also carry out his plan.

I like to think he lived.

What I Looked At Of What's Been Posted In Recent Threads
VARIOUS
Lies of Descent - Troy Carrol Bucher: Seems like an imitation of something I'd want to read, which in this case means that I won't.
Benjamin Ashwood - AC Cobble: Nope.
The Ruins of Gorlan - John Flanagan: I most certainly don't want to read this.
Company of Strangers - Melissa McShane: Don't like the prose.
Byzantium - Stephen R. Lawhead: I really don't like the voice.
Firehurler - J.S. Morin: Meh.
Columbus Day - Craig Alanson: Not the kind of prose I want to read.
Machines Like Me - Ian McEwan: The beginning read like self-published erotica under the guise of self-serious hypocritical sophistication.
Dawn of Wonder - Jonathan Renshaw: Bleh

FANTASY
THE BONE SHIPS - RJ Barker: Probably not. I may have a bias against anything nautical.
DRAGONSLAYER - Duncan M. Hamilton: Even though this is about hunting a dragon, it doesn't like seem like something I want to read.
FOR THE KILLING OF KINGS - Howard Andrew Jones: Probably not.
AN ILLUSION OF THIEVES - Cate Class: Didn't like the first person voice. I should look into if I have a bias against first person point of view.
SIXTEEN WAYS TO DEFEND A WALLED CITY - K.J. Parker: I haven't liked his novels. This isn't an exception. First person. I did like his Novelette "Amor Vincit Omnia".
THE RAVEN TOWER - Ann Leckie: Seems to be second person narrative. I don't think I've finished one before. May be interesting. I haven't read Ancillary Justice yet.
THE RUIN OF KINGS - Jenn Lyons: Looked at some time ago. May read eventually.
THE QUEEN OF ALL CROWS - Rod Duncan: 1st book of a 2nd trilogy. I like the idea of steampunk, but I don't remember any I've wanted to read, so maybe I don't actually.
BLOOD OF AN EXILE - Brian Naslund: Having everything be based around dragons could be enough for me. To be seen how it actually goes eventually.

SCIENCE FICTION
CRY PILOT - Joel Dane: Don't really like like the first person voice or the prose, but I like the premise and the possibility of fun. I'll have to think it over.
FINDER - Suzanne Palmer: Seems like it could be good.
AFTERSHOCKS - Marko Kloos: I didn't like his previous series, but I may read this. The Lucky Thirteen episode of LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS was okay.
WINDS OF MARQUE - Bennett R. Coles: Seems like it could be okay, even though I don't seem to generally like nautical themed novels.
BLACK STAR RENEGADES - Michael Moreci: I've watched all the live action Star Wars movies and think they are worth watching. This doesn't seem worth reading.

OTHER
THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR - Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone: I don't know which side of interesting this will fall on.
EMPRESS OF FOREVER - Max Gladstone: Could be good. His Craft Sequence seems it may be as well.
THE MUNICIPALISTS - Seth Fried: Don't quite know what to make of it and it's relatively short, so eventually I suppose.
ROSEWATER - Tade Thompson: Seems good.

Anything that doesn't include magic? That would include plenty of genre fiction novels. And lots of fantasy as well.
My point was going to be that science fiction is based around being speculative science fiction, which is speculating about future possibilities.

Also, if you want to get real nitpicky, all the books are written in English and have characters speaking in English. So any non-direct references could be said to have been "localized" in translation for us to better understand them. Either that or they natively developed the exact language we have with an entirely different environment and history but somehow every word's etymology remains proper and usable.

Not as strong as the first one. I definitely see what you mean. The spy theme definitely tried to push itself into the front (due to the story of course) and it didn't really feel that natural.
I'm giving the third book a chance and see where it leads. So far I really dig the single POV writing style a lot. I've grown really tired of multiple POVs where I don't really give a shit about their side of the story. I hope Stross doesn't change that in the following books.
