The Brothers K was originally meant to be a three part series but when Dostoyevsky completed the first book he realized that Ivan's arguments were too good, that in setting up a counter-argument he retroactively refuted the next two books thus rendering them useless. So those two books never came. Ivan was right and even Dostoyevsky realized it.
