What should someone interested in living a more ascetic lifestyle read? Religious books are fine, but philosophical works or even novels would be great. So far enjoyed Thoreau (even though his writing is almost unbearably smug) and Seneca

JBP? I think he only recommends eating meat (no sweets), cleaning your room, hygienic practices (washing penis)

It is a good start imo

Read the Taoists if you want a true minimalist perspective, without becoming a depressed Buddhist monk trying to brainwash your self out of existence.

>Once, Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering about, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know that he was Zhuang Zhou.
>Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuang Zhou. But he didn't know if he was Zhuang Zhou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhuang Zhou. Between Zhuang Zhou and the butterfly there must be some distinction! This is called the Transformation of Things.
Is this the Daoist equivalent of the waking and dreaming states of Advaita? Is he making a non-dualist argument?

>> No.13997488

>>13997462
No, I don't think he is at least not right there. There are various parts of the Tao Te Ching and the Zhuangzi which clearly imply non-dualism and which mention an immutable One; but that passage doesn't appear to be one of them. Rather than hinting at a continuity between the two states the text emphasizes their distinction and transformation.

It generally depends on the rules of the monastic order or sampradaya that one joins. Some shave their heads for various reasons such as that it represents them no longer taking part in normal life and maintaining one's (regular) appearance. Others may keep their hair long in homage to the familiar iconography of Shiva as the long-haired yogi meditating in the Himalayas for example.

Are Buddhist monks really depressed? Is that a thing? They seem so happy to me, from what I've seen. And Buddhist philosophy resonates with me pretty well, personally. I can see how someone might take a depressing perspective on it though, seen from a worldly and self-believing vantage, whereby the notions of impermanence and non-self seem to ring as pessimism rather than plain realism.

Check out The Coiled Serpent, while it is a little bit dated and the science in it is a bit more pseudoscience at times, it’s core messages about moderation and spirituality ring true even today, perhaps more so than when the book was first written.

Well, I'm not a Buddhist myself, nor am I well-versed in the philosophy, but as someone who originally thought of it as being depressing from my own vantage, and later forgot about it and came back to it with a different mindset, I could now see it in a new light. I'm a worldly person myself, but I was contrasting the notion of being "worldly" versus "renounced" - not critizing a population as such. Just my perspective here.
