Please give me one unironic reason for why anybody should read anything other than fiction.

Do you think you're superior for reading philosophy? Why do you do it? Do you think it'll make you happier? Do you sincerely believe that you'll be able to optimize your life by reading the scribbles of insufferable hermits? Please.

If you have a:
>PhD
>Masters
>Anything to do with the classics

Please do not comment. You fell for the meme and it's too late for you.

I prefer fiction that's both didactic and philosophical, like 1984 by George Orwell

A lot of those works of philosophy laid the groundwork for how modern civilization works today, from politics to economics to social relationships and so on. You don't have to read them to live a life, but if you'd like to understand the life you're living a bit better, they can certainly help. Dismissing all philosophy and non-fiction is just the other side of the same ridiculous coin that those who dismiss all fiction belong to.

Fiction doesn't serve the pursuit of truth

>> No.13994390

If you lead a life of any consequence at all, you will probably be confronted with ethical dilemmas, or choices in which ethics in some way matter.

Philosophy establishes a) a groundwork for the nature of valid arguments and b) a space in which hypothetical ethical dilemmas can be discussed. Philosphers tend to be people who already know a) and will attempt to "consider seriously" some particular b). Of course, in some sense the philosopher does what anybody could do, given enough time and presented with a particular situation, but life comes at you fast and it helps to preconsider the world.

Why philosophy instead of fiction, well, I would say that philosophy tends to be a kind of very compressed set of fictions.

But it can serve as a methafor for the truth right? To learn you something about moral theory or ethics or strategy.

How could you tell the metaphor contains any truth? In fiction there is no epistemology. It's made up.

From one fiction author to the next, all you get is a mirage of how they see the world.

Please point me to texts that interpret the world as it truly is.

There are none. You could take this and say, "therefore all epistemology is pointless; truth cannot be obtained," and that is up to you. I don't buy that.

I enjoy and gain satisfaction attempting ground my actions, beliefs and interpretation of the world in immutable principles.

>Do you think you're superior for reading philosophy?
I don't know many who are into philosophy, that is understandable as science has seemed to have placated people for any sense of transcendence, so in a way I do feel superior.

>Do you think it'll make you happier?
No, it would be easier for me to do nothing, but once you get a taste for philosophy you cannot go back without it tugging at you.

>Do you sincerely believe that you'll be able to optimize your life by reading the scribbles of insufferable hermits
Yes, from orthodoxy proceeds awareness of orthopraxis.
