Subhuman zoomer here, I haven’t read a full book in at least 6 years. Where should I start? How do I find out what I’m interested in?

Maybe try reading books similar to other media you like. If you like sci-fi movies try sci-fi novels, for example.

What are some good sci fi novels? I’m not into spaceships and shit, just light sci fi that is still partially grounded in reality. I also enjoy a bit of surrealism

Try some science fiction, fantasy fiction, or horror anthologies. "Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy" is a classic and very highly printed.
Follow up on authors whose stories you like. Read reviews for any of their books you're interested in so you can tell in advance if something weird is going on.

Hello Zoomer,

I hope you're still listening.

Don't fall for the memes demanding you start with the Greeks or call you a pleb. To start reading again, you have to first realize that you need to do two things:

1) Build up your reading muscles.
Reading is like a physical activity. It can be tiring and your attention span might have atrophied from modern media use. If you try to read a 500+ page novel, you will probably fail. You can build it up again, though, by reading shorter and easier stuff first. I recommend comic books, short stories, poetry, magazines, etc. until you move on to shorter novels and then you don't have to worry about it anymore.

2) Find out what is interesting to you.
Just try a few things. Maybe go to a local library or bookstore and just browse. It's not that hard to find something interesting if you have an open mind that is not blinded by /lit/'s .jpg-reading lists.

There's some truth to what you're saying. In my teens I felt like I should be reading and I did the brainlet thing of getting a huge book to start (Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa). In 2001 I'd gotten a bit less than a third of the way through. One thing that hindered progress was all the Japanese names and place names. It was hard for my 17 year old small country town brain to keep track of who was who and where was where. But I know that by 2005 I'd finally read it cover to cover. Twice.
That book got me into reading and my equal favourite book (The Count of Monte Cristo) is about as long and I read it around 2008.
I've slowed down reading for pleasure a lot since starting a degree in 2012 and working full time in early 2015 but I'm gonna start again soon. My journal with reading all began coz I wanted a challenge and I was a weeb so I liked the front cover of Musashi.

>> No.13987837

My suggestions are:
>First: Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges
Short stories with unmatchable quality. When you read a good story that is only 10 pages, the idea you got from school that books are boring and a task will dispel (you have no idea how much the cynic and dry realism of the XIX century makes the average kid from middle school hate books).
>Second: The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami
600 pages, but with easy language. This one is to kill the fear of long books.
>Third: non-fiction in your native language that is really old
It doesn't matter if it's an account from a military campaign in the XVI century or a travel diary from 1791, read with a dictionary on your side. You'll understand a difficult language and long sentences aren't that much of a problem if you have patience.

Because the books have a richer prose and take more attention span to focus and imagine what they are explaining or describing.
Most books can have a part where you are not that interested in but its long and takes a bit more dedication to and focus to get through and not skip essencial parts. Or just have a very slow start.

Theres already a anon that gives pretty good advice on how to start. I just dont agree with the part of reading comics or magazines. Best i rec you is to read the classic sci fi dystopian novels like 1984, Brave New World and shit like that. Then try to move to things like the 19th century russian authors like Dostoyevsky.

A couple of pathways I recommend to former zoomers like yourself.

The best way: clearly you have an urge to read and a willingness to figure out what the big deal is. Just start reading shit, absolutely anything looking up recommendations and let your mind take you wherever you wanna go. You will probably get bored of sci-fi, so then you'll challenge yourself with some philosophy. You'll then get annoyed that its too much to take in, so then you'll see why everyone raves about

The boomer way: Read short classic lit, so basically anything from this chart >>13985018. Usually pretty easy to get through depending and have themes obvious enough for a high school kid to figure out while at the same time make yourself feel more in the know or even a little sophisticated (and yes, that's a very pseud way of thinking about it but literally everyone on the fucking planet does it so reward yourself from

The /lit/ way: start with the Greeks. Literally impossible to begin with, but usually achievable even for my brainlet friends after around 8 months of reading other shit. Going back to classics is a lot easier than people give it credit if you push yourself.

>>13984956
Dead on.

>>13985387
Because you aren't even reading the boards, your eyes are skimming all the text and putting the meaning together in your head after hours of figuring out what you expect people to say and mean. Usually there is a little serotonin reward at the end of it because you get into an argument with some retard or laugh at a meme. That and the colour scheme is meant to be relaxing. It'll take some effort to stay focused but well worth it.

Hello subhuman zoomer. Since you posted an interesting image I've never seen before and you started a good-faith thread, I'll chime in.

You already have the right idea of just trying to read something, anything at all, and figure out what you like. I'd recommend common sense things as the FPBP has already suggested. Start with what you like, see if there's a book on same, and go from there.

Since it looks like you're the SP >>13984185, and you indicate interest in surrealism, try some short surrealist texts and/or art books on surrealist artists.

Lots of /lit/ posters like fiction, poetry and philosophy, as well as their own version of "literary culture". Your reading doesn't need to conform to this - many posters also prefer non-fiction. I suggest a bit of both.

Do short books (whatever they are) to get the accomplishment vibe and go from there. Branch out.
