>The ascent from the human body to the work of art and from the work of art to the Idea must take place under the shadow of the whip

What's Deleuze thinking here?

i just started reading anti oedipus and i can't understand a single a word of what he is saying. what the fuck is "sunbeams in his ass" supposed to mean? what the fuck does Freudian psychoanalysis have to do with capitalism?
what should i read before reading him?

"sunbeams in his ass" refers to both bataille's story of the eye and the specific psychoanalytic case he's discussing. it's been a bit since i read AO, but it's judge schreber, right? you don't have to read much before anti oedipus if you don't want to, but it would help if you at least googled the names that come up so you can briefly read the cases and how they were used in psychoanalysis to see what DG are doing differently with them. basically the whole book is gonna be DG taking a famous psychoanalytic case and re(anal)yzing it.

and if you can't connect how having an all-encompassing theory of mind based in psychoanalysis would impact your analysis of the social, then this all might be a bit above your pay grade.

The sunbeam part is the easiest to find out. Does your edition not include footnotes?

Something having to do with asceticism maybe? By Idea, he must mean something like the Platonic Form--the essence of a thing. Ascending to the realm of ideas has long had ascetic implications even before the Christians appropriated Platonism.

to put it way way way too simply, deleuze has a consistent fascination with the way that a lot of elements of philosophy and social analysis typically located in the cartesian mind are actually mediated by the existence of the body. this is one of the most sure statements of this conviction, arguing that some of the highest-order elements of Platonic philosophy, art and the Idea, don't exist in some ethereal realm but are reached through the subjection of the body to various forces.

deleuze doesn't believe that a realm of ideas exists, at least not one that's independent of bodies. the point is a rejection of Platonism, not an affirmation or redirection of it.
