Reading literature just makes me sad, seeing how, at one point, women were pure and decent creatures. My standards being as low as virginity and not being disgusting cannot be fulfilled by one women out of the oh so many I’ve met in my life. What makes you anons most depressed whilst reading lit from a world so far back in the distance?

Except women aren't as you describe in any book. Gretchen, Sibyl Vane, Dolores Haze, maybe someone who's read more than three books could add more.

tolstoy portrayed many women in war and peace as pure and decent creatures but i don’t care to list other books as i know you are well aware of the validity of my point yet you wish to be a contrarian.

I often read 19th century pastoral literature to "escape" but I'm way too aware of why and what I'm escaping. It helps though. /sigh

Dating online has made me so sick.
I used to happen across sweet, kindhearted women in the course of my days who would love me. But I can't find any anymore. Maybe I deserve this.

Everyone is apparently trying their hardest to miss OP's point, which is that the way an average woman is portrayed in, for example, 19th century literature is far from what typical women are like in this day and age. Even if writers from that period idealized women to the point of being completely unrealistic, it still can create a sense of longing for the past for a contemporary reader who might want to live a simple life and not marry a used women
