Because the left offers more to the intellect and intellectual, while the right always delegates them to a more limited role or servile role in favor of religion, tradition, or pure action.
Also because the left has a stranglehold on academia which means they get to decide what's feasible, what gets funding, etc. and these people tend to form cliques that are rusted in academia. It's sort of starting to fall apart, however, so we'll see where this goes.

Real talk? Zizek came to my school. I had actually learned Slovene for the past couple years cause I was a fan. Why would you be interested in that? You can "talk to a modern academic" by showing up at their office hours or emailing them. They're glorified high school teachers, speaking purely in terms of their day to day function and regardless of whether you think they're smart or not. It's not hard to get access to them.
