How do I read Pynchon?
Am I supposed to search for every obscure pop culture/high culture reference?

I finally decided to dig into Bleeding Edge. I am on chapter 5, does it ever leave the gossipy soccer mom bull shit? It reminds me much of Vineland with all of its banal and mundane details, but he seems to be trying to make those details interesting and topical this time around, instead of just using them for pace setting and mood. I am not sure I am going to make it, sorry Tommy.

It's worth it, Apuposter. I feel like it took me 400 pages to really get invested but by the time I finished I had to force myself not to just re-read it immediately because I have a lot of other books I want to read. Sometime next year I'll read it again.

The sign is a subtle joke. The shop is called "Sneed's Feed & Seed", where feed and seed both end in the sound "-eed", thus rhyming with the name of the owner, Sneed. The sign says that the shop was "Formerly Chuck's", implying that the two words beginning with "F" and "S" would have ended with "-uck", rhyming with "Chuck". So, when Chuck owned the shop, it would have been called "Chuck's Feeduck and Seeduck".

Try the audio book, the guy who reads it does a great job, I got a fair amount from listening to it that I missed when reading it. That one made me a convert on audio books, they are now my standard for the second go of a book, keeps my limited reading time devoted to things I have never read and makes note taking a breeze. Think I do need to sit down and read it proper again, been a few years since my last read.

If memory serves he sort of sings them, he more suggests they are sung through rhythm and inflection, he needs to maintain the flow of the book after all. He does the same when a woman speaks, he does not really try to sound feminine, he just adjusts his speaking patterns to be more feminine instead of talking in a higher voice like most book readers. He is really good.

He did the book twice, the old version is audio cassette and very noisy, there are some obvious edits, mid sentence retakes and the like, so best to hunt down the newer version which is clean and the best audio book I have yet to hear.
