books set in modern America with modern themes such as isolation and such. Not books like Crime and Punishment with strong story arcs but stuff that feels hopeless, like taxi driver, lolita, catcher in the rye, even faulkner stuff to some extent, but modern stuff, with good prose and realistic. Kafka doesn't count because he's too silly.

And it doesnt have to be in america, just meet the criteria found in the examples. Even Huck Finn can inch it's way onto the list, but Id like heavier stuff.

This book was Catcher in the Rye before Catcher in the Rye existed. Also this is more edgy, if that matters to you.

I read that and guignols band. I guess it counts, but wasnt very good to me, bukowski stuff too. I prefer refined stuff. Best examples are catcher and taxi driver. That book is more like an adventure book, and didnt really feel hopeless or isolated in the way these other two do, as it's his whole life rather than just some angsty moments.

sun also rises fits onto the list too. Maybe metamorphosis, the kafka story and hentai. Moreso the hentai rather than the kafka, but I dont feel like thinking too hard on it right now.

based on reading col49 and v, Pynchon sucks, but the movie inherent vice, but more the big lebowski might fit onto the list. Pynchon's books are just try too hard to be funny, and arent funny. There was some stuff I liked though. tcol49 was better maybe.
