How come I've seen /lit/ charts on the most obscure shit, like Islamic mysticism or Burmese Leninist theory, but I've never seen even a basic chart on poetry? I'm looking to start reading poetry, what's a good book for beginners? I don't trust any of the lists when I look it up because they all have Rupi Kaur on them. Also, is Sylvia Plath just a more vintage version of Rupi Kaur or is she a legitimately good poet? I'm so dumb I can't tell.

See the "Poets" section. Quite old and not very well formatted by it has good content plus an attached chart.

my path to poetry is kind of random. I read Hyperion by Dan Simmons when I was about 15 and first heard of John Keats, took a passive interest. Later in my AP lit class when I was 17 I read his poem 'When I have Fears that I May Cease to Be' which I loved. I decided to buy a book of his only a year or two ago. I write a little bit myself now, because I love the style so much, but to find other authors it always helps to research what authors were in your poet of choice's literary circles, which they read, which ones they influenced, etc. This is a fairly endless web.
pic related is a poem of mine

I highly recommend Western Wind. Fantastic for learning to read poetry and also appreciate it.

There are lots of books on english is (or whatever your native language is). Poetic Meter and Poetic Form by Paul Fussell is a nice and easygoing introduction which you'll might find useful. Alternatively, Antonio Quilis' Métrica española will serve the same purpose if you're interested in spanish poetry. They are both quite easy to find online.

Sylvia Plath is great. She's been judged harshly for a rather juvenile and sentimental novel, but her poetry has overcome criticism and detractors over decades. It's intricate, honest and delicate. Just read her. Ariel has her best poems.
