The prior sounds like “ahistorical period”
The latter can make the “h” silent so it sounds like “an -istorical” period without making it sound “ahistorical”

No one says “an history” because “ahistory” isnt a proper word and because its harder to say “an -istory” compared to just pronouncing the “h”
