My college professor told me that Penguin's philosophy editions are really bad. Could you tell me why?

The screech Montaigne from penguin I had was fine and Thucydides was penguin translation. What translations did Hemingway and Melville read anon? I think this shit about these contemporary translators being superior is bullshit.

It's true. For fiction Penguin is fine but avoid their philosophy books; usually Oxford or Cambridge, Hackett, Routledge, or some university press have the better translation, annotations, etc.
Also, if one is an academic philosopher, there is the (kinda stupid) expectation that you reference the most-often cited/standard edition (qua translation) of the work: so U of Minnesota P instead of Penguin for Anti-Oedipus for example, or either the Kaufmann translations or the newer Cambridge editions of Nietzsche (though preferably, you would just ref the KSA)…

Bloomsbury/Continuum is also cheap commercial-academic publishing. What you want is the university presses.
