Hey, /lit/.
I have to admit, I am a sucker for opening lines.
ITT: post your favorite "first line".
I'll start:

"The thousand injuries of Fourtunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge."
--Edgar Allen Poe; "The Cask of Amontillado"

I don't know why, but something about that line gives me shivers.

If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.

"A screaming came across the sky."

Those two really stick out in my mind.

"Marley was dead, to begin with." I've always loved that opening line.

"Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show." Dickens writes good opening lines.

"It is the privilege of tale-tellers to open their story in an inn, the free rendezvous of all travellers, and where the humour of each displays itself without ceremony or restraint." - Kenilworth by Walter Scott. I think I only like this so much because I work in a hotel and when I was reading this we had a guy stay with us named Walter Scott. Synchronicity and shit.
