Fighting Fantasy, actually. The books were a big influence. I can see it, especially in the older ones. They always had a good amount of detail NOT written into the books.
Titus Groan and King in Yellow are good recs. Also check out Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came, Dante's Inferno (specifically Inferno), and various horrible myths from Greece, Mesopotamia, and the Aztecs.
