2019... I am forgotten..

Nah
That's actually pretty mediocre as far as Buzzati goes. His only outstanding work is Myster shop/Boutique di Mysterio

Try Jorge Luis Borges, he does the same thing as Buzzati, only he does it better

I want to get into this book but the prose is unimpressive and he hits you over the head with his themes. Is it like that all the way through?

And the first 40 pages gave me the strong impression that this was something that Kafka did better.

If you're talking about the Tartar steppe, yeah, don't bother, it's mediocre

I have only read the Opposing Shore by Gracq but have heard from amazon reviewers that its very similar to TTS but better

It's similar but Gracq's novel is more political (and definitely better of course).

i wouldn't say they do the same thing. buzzati wrote psychological novels, he essentially belongs to the french naturalism. borges is much more of a "lyricist" or a philosopher.

it's the kafka in borges that makes it seem like borges does buzzati better

I'm biased because The Opposing Shore is my favorite novel, but I've read both and while TOS is the better novel they're different enough that reading The Tartar Steppe is also worth your time.

The basic premise is almost exactly the same but thematically and plotwise it goes in different directions, TTS is more about internal psychology and it's also way more depressing

in my opinion kafka and borges are slightly but essentially different. borges' taste leans towards "the artificial", "the made up". kafka is a pure irrationalist. borges is an erudite hedonist, kafka is a deeply religious man.

but is TTS good? it really does seem like he beats you over the head with his themes
