You should probably specify which decades you're interested in. Post modernism generally covers everything from Orwell to the current day, with obvious differences over time.

it's a bunch of reactions to previous ideas that have no central thing uniting them. It's not just a reaction to Modernism, because they're constantly talking about way older stuff. The term is honestly dumb, all it can really mean is that they're not on board with the large-scale totalizing Modernist theories, but that is hardly a new thing, and they made their own grand narratives, so it's all kind of a meme.

Three starting points: Either Fredric Jameson, Lyotard, or Harvey.

I tend to disagree to the extend that post-modernism is also characterized by the definately post 40's social mentality that the once hoped for revolutionary potential of change (and science) in modernism would lead us to an utopia. Post-modernism is post this modernist hopes, so different than what could have been before modernsim

I'd start with the analytic philosophy that heavily influenced postmodernism like Quine's Two Dogmas of Empiricism and Kuhn's the Structure of Scientific Revolutions. Also keep the historical context in mind - two disastrous world wars enabled by science, disillusionment with the Soviet Union, rejection of modernism by early 20th century artists. Then check out Foucault and Barthes.

Nott really. It's seen as a historical stage in the human condition that we have begun to enter.

Begun to enter? By most accounts postmodernism has been going on already since the 70s.

Postmodernism and left-wing politics are pretty much indivisible despite there being no obvious correlation between them. Postmodernism has its roots on the Frankfurt School and marxist ideology and it shows.

>At a legendary seminar held at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1988, two high-profile philosophers, Jean Baudrillard and Jean-François Lyotard, confronted each other. Their conversation gradually evolved into metaphysical speculation, and they agreed that this was both “delirious and reasonable”. But then Baudrillard disengaged: “I am highly perplexed by this ….” Baudrillard was keen on discussing post-modern melancholia now that everything was “post” and “dead”. But he could not relate to the dizzying time scale for diagnosing contemporary society that Lyotard presented in these terms: “Everything may already have exploded, but nevertheless we may still be certain that one thing has yet to explode – and this explosion will not constitute a revolution: The sun … We know that it will happen 4.5 billion years from now […] I would say that regardless of whether one realises it or not, all the endeavours of techno-scientific work is carried out in order to allow for the preservation of brain functioning after the solar explosion. ‘They’ are all preparing the solar exodus …”
