Is Stephen King a literary genius or are his books the ramblings of an insane man? Is it worth delving into his dark tower universe?

If you want to get into the dark tower series just be prepared for the worst intro novel ever.

He's definitely a marketing genius. Whether or not his books are in any way good, I can't say because I would never read them in the first place. Considering what I know from the stories I doubt they're really that good. Your average crime/horror story except some fancy, well known name is printed on the cover.
