I get that this is a kids book, but why is a story this poorly told so highly regarded?

true
>every major plot point is spelled out way in advance
Eh, I think its fine if you are going a fantasy route about fate and shit, gives it a mythological feel to it. Its not delivered the best, but its servicable

Also, is it just me, or has there been a lot of Dune treads in the last 24 hours?

I dont know, I'm just a scifi-let pleb doing a flyover of the genre by reading 4 or 5 of its most popular works to see what all the fuss is about.

Every time the Harkonnens weren't on the page, I was bored to tears.
This would have been far more entertaining if it was a Game of Thrones style power struggle of the houses over control of the spice. Instead he gave us Twilight for incels.

Avoid all SF novels written before 1985. They are dated as fuck and very few of them have aged well. Also avoid all SF novels written after 2010, because the genre has just devolved into SJW bullshit and feminist nonsense.
It is possible the genre has a revival, but it would take an absolute game changer author to shake things up and get it out of its funk.

Yeah I should have know better, but I'm coming off of starship troopers do androids dream of electric sheep and I have no mouth and I must scream, it's pretty jarring to go from those styles of sci fi to more of a star wars fantasy type thing

I like everything I've read in this post, have neuromancer on deck after dune. Any recommendations after that?

Here's the /lit/erary selected sci fi chart, try starting with Shadow of the Torturer, Gene Wolfe is the GOAT.

Skip Neuromancer and read Hyperion by Dan Simmons instead.

Neuromancer is good, but it's a terrible recommendation for beginners to sci-fi. You will get to page 10 and ask "What the fuck am I reading?"

I know that the first book was about pauls rise to power. What about book 2?
I haven't read it yet. Is he overpowered?

Its about the third the length of the original book and is basically a conclusion to the original book's arcs, if you like the Paul character you owe yourself to read it.

Being dated isn't a negative trait in of itself, I like to read novels from the perspective of people who thought the universe had few boundaries left to explore, like the Canals of Mars.

First, I didn’t say it was bad, just not the greatest. Dune had a lot of cultural impact in fantasy I will give you that.
