So /lit/, what do you think of East of Eden? Someone recommended it to me, I just wanted to see if I should take the time to read it.

>> No.1374584

I dunno, never read it, but I fucking love Steinbeck. Even when he's mediocre (by his own admission, Once There Was A War) he's brilliant.

>> No.1374601

Have you read any other Steinbeck? East of Eden might not be the best place to start, but I'm pretty sure it's my favorite work by him.
the ending to Grapes of Wrath sucked

>> No.1374604

Waste of time. Skip that Cain and Able rehash bullshit.

Hell, the whole damn book was too long.

>> No.1374634

So I have brilliant and bullshit. Hell, might as well go for it.

>> No.1374637

His social commentaries are fucking stupid.

>>1374637
As in how he writes them or the views he expresses?

>> No.1374675

He always takes far too long to say far too little.

>> No.1374689

I couldn't get into it. Too dry pour moi.

>> No.1375395

I'd say it's worth reading, but the first half of the novel is vastly better. The second half gets anti-climactic and predictable at its key moments. As for social commentary, he was obviously trying to be "sprawling" and "epic" because something like Of Mice and Men is much more substantial thematically.

Both.

>> No.1375614

It's my single favorite novel ever. I love his prose, I love his characters, I love the major theme (even when it's delivered in a slightly hamfisted way), I love the whole book.

>> No.1375626

Guys, you should read the comic Steinbeck : Tortilla Flat and Sweet Thursday.
These are excellent and shorter.

>> No.1375636

>>1375626
I found Tortilla Flat really disappointing, actually. It was just Paisanos doing nothing but stealing and drinking.

>> No.1375645

>>1375636
Damn, I found it hilarious.
Maybe I did relate too much with the character.
