France publishing is very different to the anglophone world. The major houses like Guillamard take literature seriously enough not to censor it for the sake of political correctness. There’s still an air of artisanship in the major houses, whereas in New York, for instance, they’re looking for the next James Patterson or Stephanie Meyer, and someone who dares comes along with not only a serious work, but a subversive one at that, befuddles them—like, you really thought we’d take the monetary/cultural risk?

Don’t get me wrong, if you’re a great writer who happens to be subversive you can still carve out a career via New York, the publishing houses are still gunning for Nobel Prizes and literary clout, but it’s very far from being their priority. It’s just that the quality of the writing has to be legendarily high as to outweigh the subversiveness, like you’d better have written an instant classic, whereas in France they’re basically expecting their submissions to slash them with edge and it’s mostly what they publish.

Yes. If I were to pick being born as any European race, then I would go with the German. I like their reserved, somber attitude, stalwart attitude that involves self-sacrifice, and sense of duty. Not that anon, but if we were talking in terms of overall history I'd be inclined to agree with you -- the mix of armchair libertinism and featherweight moralism in France is closer to my own natuire... but the heavier German temperament, the dark romanticism and modernism, I find more stimulating. More sacred. But post-unification Germany seems utterly culturally sterile. Modern France at least has some dynamism, plus France's ego allows it to take a decadent pleasure in its own decline; they've seen everything, they change political systems like old clothes. Germany is too sincere. I find Germans nauseatingly pious. Democracy is new to them and they're so infatuated with its redemptive power that they have the attitude of credulous little children, pod people with glazed eyes.
