ah. I just go in and reserve the closed booths for my usual studying hours. it's mostly soundproof and comfy (at least for me). there's also a bunch of random nooks, crannies, and other neglected rooms around campus which are pretty good. take some time when you're bored to explore every dorm. you'll be surprised at how shitty some dorms can be *cough* Cabot *cough* and what cool hidden spaces you might find.

for example, one of my favorite spaces was the solarium on the top floor of Weld. it's in a central location, it's warm, and usually people don't use it for some reason, which makes it great for drop-in studying during the winter months. I haven't been back since freshman year though because I felt that would be a bit creepy. I wouldn't even know if my card would grant me access to the building still lol.

I will also add, consistently the most intelligent individuals I've met are from state schools. Ivy leagues are homes to the very well-conditioned within the time horizon that's relevant to generating capital, state school (the few and the not so proud) smarties would view the conditioning in a time horizon of say a generation or two, so as to realize the self-flagellation needed for entrance into an ivy league is simply too steep, and results in a type of fractured mentality that degrades and pains the next generation by unduly siphoning off love into exertions to create wealth, status, or grandeur.

Remember: All day long at an American university, you are surrounded by kikes, gooks, pakis, all of whom see your homeland as an international hub for their people to congregate, a glorified airport terminal, and then women, who will sell out your homeland to the aforementioned minorities without a second thought because "it's the nice thing to do."

>> No.13704031

These days it's exactly the same as being jealous of kids at $30,000/yr private high schools. Sure, a very rare few kids might be uniquely well-constituted to take perfect advantage of the resources and attention they receive at a school like that. But the vast majority of them are just worthless little faggots whose parents are trying to drown their mediocrity in money and praying they can polish their turd of a child into a diamond. And remember, even the few people who are genuinely exceptional still have to swim through an ocean of turds who think they're exceptional, administered by other turds who obviously don't know how to distinguish between turds and gems (being turds themselves). So a lot of real diamonds are dulled.

And in the end, again as with high school, it's just a transitory phase of life, mostly occupied with shallow socializing, and quickly forgotten. I helped someone borderline retarded write their PhD applications to several Ivy leagues last year and they got into Yale. Meanwhile the three non-retarded grad students I've met all went to state schools because they weren't rich.

It means next to nothing, and what little it does mean is quickly irrelevant. You think people who went to Harvard for a fucking bachelor's degree meaningfully integrate that experience when they're 40? Maybe in terms of networking and nepotism, yeah, but not in any real sense of bildung.

History of Art.
Did it for the sake of not getting into an impacted humanities program like Philosophy and English; everyone knows that it is the same shit at the end of the day. However, I did some independent study with one of the most notable tenured professors in my community college though, not sure if that helped me or not.
I'm also thinking of transferring to a state school since I'm hating the amount of SJWs in the classes that have no respect for merit and writing, and I feel that I won't have much prestige nor networking either way since I'm not a business major.

Just think critically and write pretty well since I really don't know if independent study helps or not, plus not all tenured professors will want to do independent study with a student in a CC; you have to be really liked and interested in their academic field taught in the course in order to have a small chance.

it's cozy depending on your preferences. some people seem to have trouble and get isolated, especially (so i hear anyway) with how competitive certain programs can be. i knew one or two people last year who were incredibly smart and dedicated, but they were completely bugging out and jeopardizing their GPAs and uni careers simply because they were slightly eccentric loners who didn't know how to reach out and get help. so definitely take care of yourself. finding the right group of friends can help. i recommend joining reading groups and going to workshops and such.

Funny story, in 2016 on November 9th, a class I was in decided to discuss Trump's victory instead of having a normal session. It was like it had just been announced that an asteroid was on a collision course with the Earth and nothing could be done to stop it. All these rich Ivy kids were talking in astonishingly condescending ways about Trump voters, like really cluelessly talking down to "those people," who need to be "led better" by their superiors etc. I mildly, VERY mildly suggested that maybe this kind of condescension was why the working class was deserting what they perceived as ivory tower coastal elites. I explicitly said I was making this critique from a Marxist perspective.

A girl ran out of the room crying and hated me from then on, and I was known as the "Trump guy" and the token conservative from that day forward.

it's funny, i was actually going to suggest platypus and then didn't for some reason. they're pretty cool, i know a few of them but mostly stayed on the outside of it. you can join their year-long reading circle thing and they'll definitely welcome you. lots of people in there who actually take their shit seriously, which is a refreshing break from the vast majority of college pseudo-leftists. that would be a good way to make some social contacts for sure.

when it comes to analytic/continental dominance i'm not really sure. there are definitely some hardcore analytics, but i actually dislike the "soft" analytics more, the ones who make a big deal out of having infused their analytic perspectives with "therapeutic" linguistic philosophies or pragmatism. if you want truly extra-analytic outlooks, you might have to go to the divinity school, social thought, or even the history/philosophy of science people. classics also has some surprisingly meaty courses on ancient thought sometimes too.

in general, there's a LOT of upward mobility at this school if you have the initiative to reach for it. that might mean schmoozing your way into the good graces of some famous mentor who can train you to be his precocious little dauphin, but more positively, it can mean really devoting yourself to learning your shit and not being afraid to seek out classes, people, workshops and so on that will broaden your horizons. really good self-motivated students stand out big time, especially by third and fourth year when they've mastered a lot of material and you can tell they're hungry to undertake real projects. when i look at the support, mentorship, and opportunities that some of the students here get because they genuinely distinguished themselves by caring a lot and working hard, i honestly get jealous. my undergrad experience was way more anonymous as a result.

Platypus are literally complete autistic tankies. The reading group is torturously boring, and if you can survive more than one meeting you will probably end up indoctrinated and mentally ill for life. The best piece of advice I can give is list your expected major as something niche i.e. a department the school spends money on but not many students major in. They are always looking to fill that department. So if you have taken latin even if you want to do something else in the humanities say classics, etc. Other than that write good essays, get good test scores, have meaningful and developed interests that are impressive (hopefully) but also are something you care about, being the captain of a million clubs which are all obviously just to boost your admission chances is see-through.

IMO the rules of dating apply here
>be attractive
>don’t be unattractive

Curate a well-rounded admissions profile that reveals you to be more than a cloistered, reserved turbo nerd. IMO, I think the essays and the letters of recommendation are going to be where you reveal your personality and character and are therefore the most important. Everything else just gets you through the door. That’s probably where most applicants fuck up—they are either too boring/insecure and they write another Boy Scouts moral compass essay, or they’re too unhinged and write about running away from home and smoking crack in a rape dungeon. You need to find a captivating yet illuminating middle ground to make you stand out as more than just a collection of test scores and extracurricular activities. My philosophy teacher wrote a stellar, if not somewhat eccentric, recommendation letter, and I wrote a two personal essays about what makes me tick (that I would never share with anybody but my closest friends and family... it was a Hail Mary move), and that got me into HYP with a 35 ACT, 15+ APs & IBs (avg score 4.8 & 37/45 diploma respectively), lackluster sports, and average extracurriculars.

Finally, if you’re just starting high school (inb4 underaged b&), then my recommendation is to learn stellar studying skills, practice extreme self-discipline, and don’t be afraid to take risks and venture out on your own. High school is one of the last opportunities to explore life without having too much responsibilities or repercussions. Learn to eat well, exercise well, and sleep well. Spend free time on weekends either socializing and playing games, or reading the Western classics, studying advanced mathematics, and writing short stories... whatever floats your boat. But don’t be afraid to ask out that cute girl who you’ll never see again after you finish your mid-terms and have no immediate stresses to worry about.

The most important lesson you can learn is becoming aware of your own agency and doing everything you can to increase your locus of control so that you can accomplish great things when the moment is right. If you keep that in mind, then when it comes to application time, you will fucking crush it. And if you get bad luck, then you will crush your state flagship undergrad and your world will be your oyster.

basically, everything here is perfect advice but I cannot reiterate enough how helpful it can be to list an unpopular major. Imagine the guarantee slots as a piechart that they will fill up before they move to riskier candidates. X amount will be legacy, X diversity, etc. A certain amount, and I know this on good authority, are reserved for students who want to pursue a major the college deems as important, whether it be unpopular or a department whose future prestige the college wants to boost. These colleges essentially have a huge pool of students who qualify to go there, so at a certain point it is just luck/random chance because their admission rates are kept lower than the number of eligible, high-achieving students who could attend. A good way to separate yourself from this group and try to move into the guaranteed group is expressing interest in your application for one of these more valued or less popular majors. No college wants to have a graduation year where nobody is majoring in a certain department, so that is part of their selection process.

I actually had to ditch all the major meetup events because of some pretty serious medical issues—and me telling you that might end up basically doxing me but I’ll probably end up seeing you in classes if you stick with the major anyways so it doesn’t matter lmao.

My summer has been dealing with said medical issues.

I’ve been sort of shopping around the field for specific topics to get interested in. I think what originally pulled me in were value-theory fields and things like that, also literary movements like romanticism etc. Pretty interested in aesthetics but god knows I haven’t read shit this summer so I’m not going in with some sort of specialized, prodigious background like some of those other kids. Damn that sucks, I hope you're doing better now. Value-theory is interesting, I got kind of hung up on meta-ethics for a while trying to justify the existence of knowledge about ethics. Drew me a bit into epistemology. I have the interest, but didn't have the focus/time to build up a truly prodigious background throughout much of high school, tho I've doe a fair bit of scattered reading. I'll semi-dox myself in return by telling you that I have a single in BJ.

I've also been reading a lot of literary modernism now funnily enough, specifically some of Ezra Pound's poetry. Don't know anything about aesthetics though, any book recommendations to learn about it?

Also I’ve been hung up on that EXACT same problem in meta-ethics, although all the reading I’ve done in ethics is ancient phil and I haven’t seriously looked into meta-ethics or analytic ethics.

All of my interest in aesthetics comes from reading lit with a few supplemental ancient philosophy readings, so I can’t recommend any good modern texts on it or anything...but I did buy an anthology from the UChicago Press called “Philosophies of Art and Beauty” which looks legit. It has selections from a lot of the big hitters and goes all the way up to Heidegger. Was gonna read it over the summer but, again, medical issues.

I sort of apply those epistemological or formal-axiological questions to all the value-theory fields whenever I think I wanna get somewhere with them and always end up losing my shit.

If you're on the FB page then you've probably been added to it. it's pretty lowkey, it's just nice to know a few people's names and interests before going.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out at some point. The only piece I remember reading about aesthetics was "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction" which is probably more applied than the more theoretical stuff but is still a super interesting look at the implications of new technology like cinema on our experience of art.

the fact of the matter is that most of this was my own fault. a combination of mood and attention issues, medicating and unmedicating, plus actual relationship woes (financial and family stress) and coming into college from a traumatic highschool experience, i was well-primed to behave in the way i did, insofar as isolating and being averse to a lot of things
things were pretty good by senior year though — i got over myself and got a handle on most of my mental issues and learned more or less to live with myself. i enjoyed my classes, engaged well, and overall just tried to stomach my regrets. i like to mire in the misery i experienced in college, but i console myself with the fact that a) both of my two friends have drastically influenced me intellectually in completely opposite directions, and they are and will continue to be an intellectual resource i can consult for the next forseeable decade [i had plenty of acquaintances and “friends”, but the only lasting bonds i had were more or less these, beyond drinking pals] b) i learned that i really dont know much and that most people also dont and c) once you read the fucking primary sources its simply your interpretation vs everyone else’s (a highly liberating mindstance, i think)
[i also impressed a creative writing teacher/author who will be a helpful recommender should i eventually try to publish again, and made some literary friends i can workshop with in the future]
note that this i think is at least a part of the chicago essence and you will certainly get at least that much out of it.

the correction steps i would have taken:
1) forced myself into a large typical college dorm rather than one of the isolating off campus ones (though nearly all of these have closed, so you shouldnt have this problem, even in BJ). i didnt realize how easily one can become entirety socially cut off, and how crippling and painful isolation can be. im more or less a normal anglo sadboi, have a cute gf and a good job now, etc, but my freshman year i was achingly alone, which was particularly hard to deal with as a college freshman. being in a crowded dorm where you have to walk past everyone hanging out in the lounge to get to your room makes socializing much easier if you struggle with it (including your hubris preventing you from doing things you think you dont want to)
2) if you have any issues studying/learning like i did (for example, being so zonked on prescribed stimulants that id just crank out 8 hours in the library even though i should have stopped after one and gotten help), be hyperconscious of what you struggle with, and adapt your studying around it. fucking go to problem sessions, ask friends for help, anything. there is no glory in struggling with a proof or a program past the second hour if you still don’t i now what it is you dont understand. i had a purist mindset of doing things on my own, plus a crippling stimulant anxiety, that kept me locked up in the library when i should have been at the problem session.
(fwiw i graduated with a 3.25 gpa, so i wasnt a total failure or anything, but i definitely struggled with some of the harder stem courses.)

don’t pressure yourself to be the asshole that just sits in every office hour for-the-sake-of, but also dont blow off office hours with those professors you do want to engage with, when youre just working on some inconsequential problem set. a few more points on your problem set means nothing compared to the connections, or at least questions and answers, youll get from office hours. fwiw i think if you dont know exactly what you want (this most people), its a lot easier to go talk with your humanities professor for an hour instead of your math one. so dont feel bad if you can’t think of compelling questions to ask your maths prof.

addendum: try not to be autistically committed to not doing X Y or Z in college if you dont have a good reason for it. people drink, and a lot of them drink like idiots, and you dont have to do that, but dont turn down a party opportunity on principle if you havent already experienced that sort of thing. go to bar night once. stay in with the nerds playing board games once. figure yourself out, and dont be the coward that already assumes you know who you are and what you want unless youre fucking sure about it. otherwise, youll end up regretting how you limited your opportunities to grow
