Jew here. We aren't secretive of mysterious. About a third of us are positively Arabs in self-denial, another third are just assimilated Americans with funny names and possibly even more Americans than other Americans. The rest are various niche sub-ethnic groups nobody really cares about.

I liked Daughters of the Schtetel, but Hasia Diner was a professor of mine and her lectures mix into the thesis enough that i mix the class and her research rants with the book.
