The whole "expendable male" theory does have some evolutionary backing, but it depends on the species. And human culture is a confounding variable to evolutionary theories.

But on the fundamental level of selection, sexual biology dictates an imbalance. Males are much like the sperm they produce, their gametes are a dime a million. There is no shortage of sperm, and the male's role in the reproductive process is very much one and done. Sticking around to rear the child aside, their role concludes at insemination and conception.

Women in contrast, have a precious supply of eggs and a shorter window of reproductive viability. They must also grow the child over 9 months. Biologically they are the more precious resource.

In result to this we have a sexual culture built around these constraints. This also explains why males tend to want quantity over quality in their selection of mates. Because the cycle is so shorter for them, they can fuck and run basically, they tend to want to plow the fields. Women in contrast are more sexually choosy, because they want to select the optimum genetic material to birth the fittest child possible.
